—CPE*

Jesus' Life (8)
Bible Reading: Matthew 27:32-44
Thursday, October 20, 2016

Roman soldiers took Jesus to a place called Golgotha. There they nailed Jesus to a cross.
When Jesus was on the cross, many people walked by and shouted insults at Him. Priests, teachers of the law and Jewish leaders made fun of Jesus. Some of these people said (verse 40b), “So save yourself! Come down from that cross if you really are the Son of God!” And the criminals on the other crosses insulted Jesus, too.
Even though people insulted Jesus, He did not become angry. Jesus didn't talk back to the people. He didn't seek revenge. Why? Because Jesus knew He had to die so our sins could be forgiven. Jesus knew God's great plan for saving us!
When you follow Jesus, other people may insult you. What will you do? Will you become angry, talk back or seek revenge? Be like Jesus. Trust God. Be thankful that He has forgiven your sins and has a plan for you. Pray for other people, too, that they will believe in Jesus and follow Him. —CPE*

“Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.’” Luke 23:34a
PRAYER: Dear God, help me to stand strong for You even when other people insult me. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—PD*

Old Testament (4)
Bible Reading: Genesis 32:24-32
Wednesday, September 28, 2016

Yesterday we talked about Jacob and his faithfulness to God. Our Bible verses today tell us about another experience that Jacob had.
“Jacob was left alone, and a man came and wrestled with him. The man fought with him until the sun came up” (verse 24). Later Jacob said, “At this place, I saw God face to face, but my life was spared” (verse 30b). God changed Jacob's name to Israel, and gave him many children and grandchildren. These descendants became the nation of Israel.
Jacob faced some difficult times in his life. We, too, will experience many things as we live here on earth. Some days will be good, and some days will be bad. But we can know that God will be with us and help us through all these experiences.
Think about Jacob today. God was with Him, and God will be with you, too! Praise Him for His love and protection. —PD*

—JD*

God's Children
Bible Reading: Romans 8:18-25
Saturday, July 9, 2016

As God's children, we all have sufferings we must endure. These sufferings may be sickness or family problems or persecution. In our Bible Reading today, Paul says that these sufferings are nothing when compared with what God will give us.
God has already given us His Holy Spirit to help and comfort us. But we are waiting for the time when God will “finish making us his own children” (verse 23b). At that time, everything God made will “have the same freedom and glory that belong to God's children” (verse 21b).
Until the time Jesus comes again, we are waiting like a woman waits for the birth of her baby. As a woman goes through childbirth, she suffers pain. In the same way, we will face suffering as we live on earth.
I hope you are looking forward to God's promise of a new home where there is no pain, suffering or crying. Be patient as you wait for Jesus to come again. —JD*

—GT

Bad Things
Bible Reading: Romans 8:18-30
Thursday, June 30, 2016

Yesterday we talked about being thankful for the good things in our lives. Today we will talk about being thankful for the bad things in our lives. I have had many bad things happen to me. I almost lost my baby before she was born. Another time, I almost died from a serious infection. And I have been in three car accidents. It's not easy to thank God for these kinds of things.
But it is important to tell God we are thankful for the bad things that happen to us — even if we don't feel thankful. After the bad has ended, we will see that God can bring good from bad. God can use bad things to bless us. Verse 28 of our Bible Reading says, “We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him. These are the people God chose, because that was his plan.” God has promised to always do what is best for us.
Thank God right now for the bad things and for the good things that He will make happen in your life. —GT

—DVH*

God's Servant
Bible Reading: Isaiah 52:13-53:12
Sunday, June 5, 2016

I read these words of the praise song, “Here I Am to Worship” — “I’ll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross.” These words talk about how much God loves us and how much Jesus suffered so that we could have our sins forgiven.
Our Bible verses today are a prophecy about God's servant. This servant was humble and was treated very badly. He was “crushed because of our guilt” and “took the punishment we deserved” (verse 5). Who is this servant? Jesus!
Jesus never sinned. But He accepted our sins and died on the cross. He was punished instead of us. Through Jesus' death we are made right with God. This is amazing!
We can never measure Jesus' sacrifice for us. Praise and thank God today for His Son and His willingness to die for us! —DVH*

Suffering
Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 11:21b-29
Wednesday, May 25, 2016

When we read about Jesus' life on earth, we learn that He suffered a lot. Jesus was rejected and ridiculed, beaten and then killed on a cross.
In our Bible verses today, we read that Paul suffered many things, too. He said (verse 27), “I have done hard and tiring work, and many times I did not sleep. I have been hungry and thirsty. Many times I have been without food. I have been cold and without clothes.” Paul also said that he suffered by caring so much for all the Christians in the churches he served.
1 Peter 2:21 says, “This is what you were chosen to do. Christ gave you an example to follow. He suffered for you. So you should do the same as he did.” As Christians, we will face suffering, too. Maybe this suffering will be that people will make fun of us. Or maybe we will be killed because we are Christians.
Don't be ashamed of Jesus. Be willing to suffer for Him today! – JD*

—JK

Bible Reading: Matthew 27:32-44
Wednesday, November 18, 2015

I remember a Christmas gift exchange when I was in the third grade. One boy received a pair of mittens as his gift. The rest of the class got toys, games or books. Some of the children started making fun of the boy and his mittens. They teased him and called him names. Finally, he started crying and ran out of the classroom!

Have you ever felt ashamed or embarrassed like that little boy? Today’s Bible verses tell us about a time when people made fun of Jesus. The soldiers made a crown of thorns for His head. They teased Jesus and spit on Him. Finally, they killed Him!

Jesus suffered more than any embarrassment we might face here on earth. He did that for us. Why? Because He loves us so much! Jesus was willing to endure pain so that we can have our sins forgiven. He died so that we can live forever with Him.

Praise God that Jesus was willing to be our sacrifice. —JK

Hymns (7)
Bible Reading: Psalm 31:1-24
Tuesday, May 22, 2015

Hymns (7) Horatio Spafford lived from 1828 to 1888. His only son died during the great fire in Chicago in 1871. Then Horatio sent his wife and daughters to France on a ship. During the voyage, the ship collided with another ship and sank. Horatio’s daughters died, but his wife survived.
Horatio got on another ship and sailed to be with his wife. While sailing, he wrote the words of the hymn, “It is Well with My Soul.” These words have comforted many people who were facing troubles. “When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll. Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, ‘It is well. It is well with my soul.’”
The writer of Psalm 31 faced troubles, too. And he depended on God to take care of him. We all have troubles in our lives. These troubles may be financial problems, sickness or the death of a loved one. During these times, we need to trust God and let Him take care of us. —BH

Tuesday, May 21, 2015

Hymns (6) Charles Tindley (1851-1933) was born a slave. He worked hard every day plowing fields, and at night he went to school to learn to read. Later Charles became a pastor. He loved to sing, so often he would write new hymns to go with his sermons.
One Sunday, Charles preached a sermon on why we have troubles. To help the people in his church, he wrote the hymn, “We’ll Understand It Better By and By.” This song says that we may not understand here on earth why we have troubles. But someday, when we are with God, we will understand better.
The writer of Psalm 118 wrote about troubles that he had faced. He probably did not understand why he was having those troubles. But he knew that God was with him to give him strength.

—DK

“I am Thirsty”
Bible Reading: John 19:1-3, 28-29
Wednesday, April 1, 2015

“I am Thirsty” We know that Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is also called the Son of Man. Why? Because Jesus was human, too. Jesus’ mother on earth was Mary. Jesus worked, ate, studied, slept and cried — just like we do.
Our Bible Reading tells us what people did to Jesus. He felt pain when the soldiers whipped Him and “made a crown from thorny branches and put it on his head”(verse 2). Jesus’ body became weak, but the soldiers forced Him to carry a heavy wooden cross. Jesus suffered terrible pain when they nailed Him to the cross.
Jesus also became thirsty as He hung on the cross. Do you know what the soldiers gave Him? Verse 29 tells us that the soldiers gave Jesus “sour wine” to drink. Even while Jesus was dying, the soldiers continued to tease and hurt Him. They wouldn’t even give Jesus a drink of water!
Why did Jesus suffer so much? Because He loves you and me. He was willing to accept the punishment for our sins. Thank You, Jesus, for dying for me! —DK

Suffering
Bible Reading: Acts 14:21-28
Sunday, June 29, 2014

Suffering Today we read that Paul and Barnabas went back to several churches they had visited before. Why? “In those cities they helped the followers grow stronger in their faith and encouraged them to continue trusting God” (verse 22a).
Paul and Barnabas also told these people that they would face suffering for God’s kingdom. Sometimes people think that when they become a Christian, everything will be fine and they will not face hard times. But if we are truly following Jesus, we will face suffering and persecution.
When I make a salad, I don’t just throw lettuce in the bowl and eat it. I add other vegetables and things that make a good salad. Our faith is like that. It is built on the suffering we face as well as the good times.
Don’t be surprised when you experience suffering in your Christian life. Use those times to make your faith grow stronger. —SH*
