Depend on God
Bible Reading: Proverbs 3:5-8
Friday, November 18, 2016

Some people do not want anyone’s help. These people think that depending on someone else shows that they are weak. They refuse to ask for help, even when they need it.
As Christians, we need to depend on God. He is the only one who will never fail us or let us down. Verse 5 of our Bible Reading today reminds us of this. “Trust the Lord completely, and don't depend on your own knowledge.” In this verse we learn something that we should do and something that we should not do.
First, we should depend on God every day. We can always trust Him to help us. God loves us and wants what is best for us. He will help us with our big problems and with our small problems. Second, we should not depend on our own knowledge. Sometimes what I think I should do is wrong. God knows His whole plan for our lives. That's why we should completely depend on Him.
Do you need help today? Depend on God! —PD

“With every step you take, think about what he wants, and he will help you go the right way.” Proverbs 3:6
PRAYER: Father, I will depend on You to guide me today. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Temptation
Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:12-13
Tuesday, November 15, 2016

When I hang clothes on my clothesline, my dog and cat go outside with me.
My cat likes to jump into the basket where I have folded the clean clothes. Then she loves to roll around on the clothes. My cat knows that she is not supposed to get into the basket. As long as my dog is near, the cat will avoid the basket. But as soon as the dog is out of sight, the cat will sneak closer and closer. Then she rubs against the basket and starts touching the clothes with her paw. Finally, she will very carefully crawl into the basket.
Many times we are like my cat. There are things in life that tempt us to sin. We know we should avoid them, but we get as close as we can and then we give in to the temptation. Our Bible Reading today tells us some good news: God will give us a way to escape the temptations we face.
When you are tempted to sin, remember that you can resist the temptation. Depend on God and His Word to help you! —LL

“But when you are tempted, God will also give you a way to escape that temptation. Then you will be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13b
PRAYER: God, thank You for helping me resist temptation today. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Psalm 119 (11)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:81-88
Sunday, November 13, 2016

My son was struggling in school and was bullied by some of his classmates. So finally my husband and I made the decision to homeschool my son.
We homeschooled our son for several years until we felt that the school system was ready to help him learn and grow. During those years, we received much criticism from friends and family members about our choice to homeschool. My husband and I felt like the writer of Psalm 119:86. “All your commands can be trusted. Those people are wrong to persecute me. Help me!”
My husband and I prayed about our decision to homeschool and asked God to help us. When people criticized us, we remembered that we were doing what we thought was right. God took care of us and blessed our son.
Ask God to give you wisdom today as you make difficult decisions. Then depend on Him to help you and take care of you. —BH

—BR

Proverbs (3)
Bible Reading: Proverbs 2:1-9
Friday, November 4, 2016

Many times in life we depend on our family members or friends to help us. Most of the time, these people are willing to help us. But sometimes they may fail and disappoint us.
Our Bible verses today remind us that we can depend on God to help us. One way He helps us is to give us wisdom, knowledge and understanding. “If you listen to him, you will understand what is just and fair and how to do what is right” (verse 9).
How can we listen to God? By reading His Word, the Bible. When we read and study the Bible, God helps us to understand it. And He also shows us how to apply that understanding to our daily lives.
No matter what happens today, remember that you can depend on God. He is always ready to pay attention to you and help you. Trust Him to give you wisdom, knowledge and understanding. —BR

Bible Reading: Psalm 119:65-72
Thursday, October 27, 2016

When I was in college, I took a math class. Sometimes when I tried to solve a math problem, I felt like my head would explode. I thought that those math problems were the worst things I would ever experience.
But during the past few years, I have experienced many bad things. Since my husband died, I have had the responsibility of taking care of my sons and dealing with my own health problems. I have to make important decisions all the time.
In our Bible Reading today, we learn how we should handle important decisions. The first thing we should do is ask God for His help and wisdom — “Give me the knowledge to make wise decisions” (verse 66a). Then we need to make sure we are obeying God's Word — “But now I carefully obey everything you say” (verse 67b). Finally, we need to ask God to guide us — “Teach me your laws” (verse 68b).
Do you have important decisions to make today? Talk to God about these decisions and ask Him to give you wisdom and strength. —BH

—BH

In the Desert (1)
Bible Reading: Genesis 21:14-21
Thursday, August 18, 2016

Sometimes people say that they feel like they are in the desert. That doesn't mean that they are in a dry place on earth. It means that they are confused and don't know what to do in life.
In our Bible Reading, a woman named Hagar was in a dry desert place. Abraham had sent her and her son, Ishmael, away. Soon Hagar ran out of water. She and Ishmael started to cry. Verse 17a says, “God heard the boy crying, and God's angel called to Hagar from heaven. He said, ‘What is wrong, Hagar? Don't be afraid!’” Then God allowed Hagar to see a well, and she was able to get some water to drink. God continued to take care of Hagar and Ishmael as they lived in the desert.
When we face a difficult situation or we are confused about what we should do, we can always ask God for help. He will help us through our bad times and continue to lead us every day. Maybe you feel like you are in the desert today. You are not alone. God is with you. Ask Him to help you! —BH

—JK

Bible Animals (5)
Bible Reading: Luke 10:25-37
Thursday, May 19, 2016

In Bible times, many people rode donkeys. Our Bible story today tells about a man from Samaria who had a donkey.
The Jews and the Samaritans did not get along. If a Jew saw a Samaritan, he would avoid him and not speak to him. Jesus told a story about a Jewish man who was traveling. “Some robbers surrounded him, tore off his clothes, and beat him. Then they left him lying there on the ground almost dead” (verse 30b). Two Jewish men walked past the hurt man and did not help him.
Finally a man from Samaria came down the road. He felt sorry for the man. So he took care of the man's wounds and “put the hurt man on
his donkey, and he took him to an
inn. There he cared for him” (verse 34b). Even though these men were enemies, the Samaritan man stopped and helped the Jew.

We should help other people
— even those people who are our enemies. It is not easy to help a person that we do not like. But God will give us strength and wisdom so that we can obey His Word. —JK

—JK

Water Miracles (6)
Bible Reading: John 2:1-11
Saturday, April 23, 2016

 While Jesus
was on earth,
He did many
miracles.
Jesus could
do these
miracles
because He is
God's Son. Jesus did many miracles to help people.
In our Bible Reading today, we read that Jesus, His mother and some of His followers were at a wedding. All the wine was gone, and the people did not know what to do. Jesus told the servants to
fill six large water pots with water. Then Jesus told them to take out some water and give it to the man in charge of the feast. The man tasted it. Jesus had changed the water into wine! Verse 11b tells us that by this miracle Jesus “showed his divine greatness, and his followers believed in him.” This miracle showed how powerful Jesus was. And this miracle helped Jesus' followers believe in Him. Every day Jesus' followers learned more about Him.
Jesus is not living on earth today and performing miracles. But we can read about His miracles in the Bible. When we read these things, we can understand how powerful Jesus is! —JK

—ECW

God With Us
Bible Reading: Isaiah 7:14-16
Wednesday, December 2, 2015

God With Us Matthew 1:23 says, “The virgin will be pregnant and will give birth to a son. They will name him Immanuel. (Immanuel means ‘God with us.’)” This verse is a quote from our Bible Reading today. Isaiah prophesied that a virgin (Mary) would give birth to a baby (Jesus). Isaiah also said that Mary’s baby would be called “Immanuel.”
Jesus came to earth as a baby. This event was God coming to live among people. Jesus was born just like you and I were born. He grew up, He ate food, and He worked. But Jesus was different. He was a man, and He was also God!
God came to earth in the form of Jesus. He suffered like we suffer. God and Jesus understand what it feels like to be sad or hungry or lonely or tempted. Because God and Jesus understand these things, they can give us help and comfort.
Thank God for Jesus — His wonderful gift for all people in the world! —ECW

Love But Not Like?
Bible Reading: Luke 10:25-37
Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Love But Not Like? Many Christians say, “You have to love everyone, but you don't have to like them.” When a person says this, they are probably thinking about someone they do not get along with. The person who says this is making an excuse. Why? Because they do not want to associate with that person.
Does this agree with the kind of love we read about in the Bible? No, the Bible teaches us to not worry about liking someone. Instead, we should reach out to all people, even someone who refuses to love us!
In today's Bible Reading, Jesus taught us that we should not reject people who are different than we are. We should show these people our love by helping them. The Samaritan in our Bible verses could have walked away from the injured man. Instead, he helped him.
Jesus wants us to be like the Samaritan. We should “go and do the same” for other people (verse 37b). —MK

“My children, our love should not be only words and talk. No, our love must be real. We must show our love by the things we do.” 1 John 3:18
