Old Testament (6)
Bible Reading: Exodus 20:1-17
Friday, September 30, 2016

God gave His people, the Israelites, many rules to help them live good lives. Some of these rules are listed in our Bible Reading today. Often we call these rules “The Ten Commandments.”
Some people think that Christians should not pay attention to the Ten Commandments because they are in the Old Testament. But Jesus talked about these commandments a lot. In Matthew, chapter 5, Jesus said that wanting to break these commands in our heart is the same as doing the wrong thing.
In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus tells us the two most important commands we must obey. “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.’
If we obey these two commands, we will have a good relationship with God and get along with other people. —RF*

“But I will be very kind to those who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of generations.” Exodus 20:6
PRAYER: Father, thank You for showing me how I can please You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Bible Reading: Mark 5:21-24, 35-43
Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Jairus was a man who loved God. Our Bible Reading tells us that Jairus' daughter was sick and dying. Jairus came to Jesus and begged Jesus to heal his daughter.
As Jesus was going to Jairus' house, some men came and told Jairus that his daughter had died. But Jesus said to Jairus, “Don't be afraid; just believe” (verse 36b). Jesus went to Jairus' house. He went to the room where Jairus' daughter was. Jesus said, “‘Little girl, I tell you to stand up!’ The girl stood up and began walking” (verses 41b-42a).
Jairus went to Jesus because he knew that Jesus could help him. Sometimes when we have a problem, we work and work to solve the problem. Then when we don't know what to do, we pray and ask for help. But we should pray first!
If you are facing problems today — financial problems, sickness, divorce, the death of a loved one — be sure to pray and ask God to help you. —JK

[Jesus said,] “Why are you people crying and making so much noise? This child is not dead. She is only sleeping.” Mark 5:39b

—JK

Bible Fathers (3)
Bible Reading: 1 Kings 2:1-4
Tuesday, June 21, 2016

Our Bible father today is King David. Our Bible Reading tells us that David was old and about to die. So he talked to his son, Solomon. David said to Solomon, “Now, carefully obey all the commands of the Lord your God. Carefully obey all his laws, commands, decisions and agreements” (verse 3a). David continued by telling Solomon to be kind to other people.
David gave Solomon the best advice any parent can give their children. It is important for a parent to teach their children to brush their teeth and get enough sleep. But it is far more important to teach children to love and obey God.
Parents today spend lots of money to make sure that their children receive the best education. There is nothing wrong with a good education. But it is even better to teach your children about obeying and loving God.
Do you have an opportunity to teach children? Be sure to teach them the important lesson that David taught Solomon. —JK

PRAYER: Father, help me to teach the children I meet today about You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—CPE*

Giving (4)
Bible Reading: Acts 2:42-47
Tuesday, June 14, 2016

There are a couple more important things to remember about giving. First, giving to God is a beautiful way to worship Him. Giving was a part of the worship experience in the early church. In our Bible reading for today, the believers were happy to give to God and share with each other! In 1 Corinthians 16:2, Paul told the Christians in Corinth, “On the first day of every week, each of you should take some of your money and put it in a special place.”
Second, giving to God shows your love to Him. Everything we do as Christians is motivated by love for God and for others. 1 John 3:18 says, “My children, our love should not be only words and talk. No, our love must be real. We must show our love by the things we do.” God has already shown the full extent of His love. Giving back to God is a marvelous way to show our love for Him in return.
Worship God by giving to Him and others. And remember that giving to God shows how much we love Him. —CPE*

Trusting God
Bible Reading: Romans 8:28-30
Monday, March 28, 2016

My 84-year-old brother-in-law slipped and fell in the garage. He broke the large bone in his upper leg. After surgery, he needed several weeks of physical therapy. His wife was not able to take care of him at home, so he had to go to a nursing home until his leg was healed.
My brother-in-law did not want to live in a nursing home. He was very upset. But there was no one else who could take care of him, so he decided to trust God. He read the verses in our Bible Reading today. Verse 28a says, “We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him.” After reading those verses, he felt better.
After my brother-in-law had been in the nursing home for a few days, he realized that he needed to be there. He was not upset anymore. Soon he was able to stand up and then able to go home again.
Maybe there is something in your life that is upsetting you. Trust God. He will work things out in a good way. Then you will be happy that you trusted Him. —DJH*

Love
Bible Reading: Luke 10:25-37
Saturday, March 19, 2016

In our Bible Reading today, we find God's most important commands. Verse 27b tells us these commands: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ Also, ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.’” When I was a children's minister, I told the kids in my youth group that there were only two rules: Love God, and love other people. I told the children if they did these two things, we would get along fine.
Really, that is what we need to do, too. If we love God, we will live for Him and do things that please Him. And, if we love God, we will love other people, too. Sometimes that is hard. Why? Because people hurt us or do not treat us right. But Jesus said we should love them anyway.

God is love. We need to show our love to Him and to other people. —JM

“Then Jesus said, ‘Which one of these three men do you think was really a neighbor to the man that was hurt by the robbers?’ The teacher of the law answered, ‘The one who helped him.’” Luke 10:36-37a
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I want to love You better and to love other people like I love myself. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

—DF

Simple Prayers (4)
Bible Reading: Judges 13: 1-25
Monday, November 9, 2015

Our Bible verses today tell us that Manoah and his wife were not able to have any children. God’s angel came to Manoah’s wife. He told her that she would have a son. “He will be God’s special person from before he is born. He will save the Israelites from the power of the Philistines” (verse 5b).

Manoah’s wife told her husband what the angel had said. Then Manoah prayed this simple prayer, “Lord, I beg you to send the man of God to us again. We want him to teach us what we should do for the boy who will soon be born” (verse 8b).

It would be wonderful if all parents would pray this simple prayer for their children. Every child is a gift from God. We need God’s wisdom and help to raise our children so they will love and honor God.

Do you have children or grandchildren? Ask God to help you as you raise these children to be God’s servants. God paid attention to Manoah’s prayer, and He will pay attention to you, too. —DF

—MK

Christian Love
Bible Reading: Galatians 5:22-25
Friday, October 16, 2015

Christian Love There is a lot of confusion about how to know if people are really Christians. Some people say we can know Christians because they do good things. Other people say real Christians must have spiritual gifts. Some people say we know people are Christians if they are baptized. Others say we can know people are Christians if they say they believe in Jesus. And still other people say real Christians know the Bible and believe the “right” things.
Christians do many of those things. But what does the Bible say about being a Christian? Today’s Bible verses tell us what a real Christian is like. The first thing on the list is love. Jesus said if we love Him, we will obey Him (John 15:10). Jesus commanded us to love other people (John 13:34). Also, in 1 John 4:7-8 we learn that people who follow Jesus show love for others.
The Bible tells us that someone who is a Christian will show love for God, Jesus and other people. I hope you will show love today. —MK

—MK

Love is Necessary
Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13
Thursday, October 15, 2015

Love is Necessary In our Bible Reading today, Paul listed some amazing things: speaking many languages, understanding secret things, telling prophecies, having amazing faith that can do miracles, and even giving up one’s life. But Paul said that if a person does not have love, these things are worthless!
If we do wonderful things because we love God and other people, then these things are a beautiful way to show love. These things glorify God and help other people. But if we do good things because we want people to notice us and give us praise, then the things we do are worthless.
If we really love, we will not be interested in receiving a reward for what we do. We will do good things because we want to glorify God and help other people.
I hope you will love and do good things for God and others today.—MK

Command to Love
Bible Reading: Matthew 22:36-40
Tuesday, October 13, 2015

Command to Love Many times in the Bible, God commands us to love Him and also to love other people. One time people asked Jesus what the greatest commands were. Jesus answered by quoting verses from the Old Testament.
In our Bible Reading today, Jesus said that the greatest commands are for us to love God and to love other people. Jesus said in verse 40 that ALL the laws in the Bible come from these two commands. Romans 13:8-10 tells us that if we truly want to obey God, we must love others.
In the book of John, Jesus commanded His followers to love each other. He said that we must do this so we can follow Him. Jesus also said that people will know we follow Jesus by the way we love God and others (John 13:35).
Chapters 3 and 4 of 1 John explain that if we want to follow Jesus, we must love God and others. If we truly belong to Jesus, we will obey His command to love. —MK

God and Love
Bible Reading: 1 John 4:19-21
Saturday, July 11, 2015

God and Love Our Bible verses today teach us a couple of things about God and about love.
First, verse 19 tells us something about our love for God. Why do we love God? Because He loved us first. Romans 5:8 tells us, “But Christ died for us while we were still sinners, and by this God showed how much he loves us.” God loved us even when we were lost in our sins.
Second, these verses teach us something about loving God and other people. “If we love God, we must also love each other as brothers and sisters” (verse 21b). This verse really touched my heart. I love God, but sometimes I do not love other people. But if I truly love God, I will love others, too.
I encourage you to think about your relationships with other people. Are you truly loving them? If not, ask God to forgive you and help you to start loving your brothers and sisters in Christ. —BC*
“If we say we love God but hate any of our brothers or sisters in his family, we are liars. If we don’t love someone we have seen, how can we love God?” 1 John 4:20
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, please help me to love others every day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
