Summer (4)
Bible Reading: Psalm 103:1-13
Monday, July 18, 2016

One summer day when I was a child, I played near our basement window. I was not paying attention to what I was doing, and I accidently broke the window. I was afraid to tell my parents about the window. I even thought about pretending that I knew nothing about it. But I felt guilty, so I told my mother what I had done. She said I would have to tell my dad when he came home.
When Dad came home, I did not see him. Later I checked the window, and it had been repaired! My parents had talked about the window and decided not to punish me. They never mentioned the broken window again!
My parents were forgiving. Our Bible Reading today reminds us that God is forgiving, too. Verse 10 says, “We sinned against him, but he didn't give us the punishment we deserved.” I am so thankful that God loves and forgives me. I hope you are thankful, too. —CW*

“And he has taken our sins as far away from us as the east is from the west.” Psalm 103:12
PRAYER: God, please forgive my sins. Help me to be obedient to You today. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—PD

Delete
Bible Reading: Psalm 32:1-11
Wednesday, February 3, 2016

When I went to school, the teacher wrote our lessons on a chalkboard. When she was done, she would erase the board. But when the teacher erased the board, you could still faintly see some writing on the board. To really clean the board, she had to wash it. Today when I type with my computer, it is easy to erase my mistakes — I just press the “delete” key on my keyboard, and the mistakes are gone.
Verse 1 of our Bible Reading says, “It is a great blessing when people are forgiven for the wrongs they have done, when their sins are erased.” When God erases our sins, they are completely gone. Ephesians 5:26b tells us that Jesus “died to make the church holy. He used the telling of the Good News to make the church clean by washing it with water.”Mbr> Because of Jesus' death on the cross, we can have our sins deleted forever. Confess your sins to Him today, change your heart and mind and obey His Word. —PD

“...then I decided to confess my sins to the Lord. I stopped hiding my guilt and told you about my sins. And you forgave them all.” Psalm 32:5
PRAYER: Father, thank You for forgiving my sins and making me clean. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

-JR*

Ezra (4)
Bible Reading: Ezra 10:1-3
Sunday, August 2, 2015

Ezra (4) Yesterday we talked about the Jews disobeying God. Ezra was very sad about their sin. Verse 1 of our Bible Reading says, “Ezra was praying and confessing. He was crying and bowing down in front of God’s Temple.”
Then one man, Shecaniah, was very brave. He confessed that the Jews had sinned. “We have not been faithful to our God. We have married the people living around us. But even though we have done this, there is still hope for Israel” (verse 2b). Then Ezra, the priests and the rest of the Jews promised to obey God.
It is often hard to admit that we have sinned. But after we confess our sin, other Christians will support us and help us to stay away from temptation.
Thank God today for His amazing forgiveness! Follow Him and obey His Word. —JR*
“But if we confess our sins, God will forgive us. We can trust God to do this. He always does what is right. He will make us clean from all the wrong things we have done.” 1 John 1:9

-JS*

Ezra (3)
Bible Reading: Ezra 9:10-15
Saturday, August 1, 2015

Ezra (3) Our Bible Reading today tells us about a time when God’s people did not obey Him. God had told the Jews that they should not allow their sons and daughters to marry foreigners who did not worship God. But the Jews disobeyed God!
Ezra loved and worshiped God. He bravely confronted the Jews and told them that they had sinned against God. In verse 12 he reminded the people about God’s commands. “Obey my commands so that you will be strong and enjoy the good things of the land. And then you can keep this land and give it to your children.”
God’s people sinned, but Ezra encouraged them to confess their sin, repent and start obeying God. We are sometimes like the Jews. We sin and turn away from God. God wants us to return to Him. He wants to bless us and help us not sin again.
Confess your sin, change your heart and follow God. He is ready to forgive and bless you. —JS*
“But God is being patient with you. He doesn’t want anyone to be lost. He wants everyone to change their ways and stop sinning.” 2 Peter 3:9b
PRAYER: Father, forgive me and help me to focus on You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

-LB

Good Example
Bible Reading: Psalm 51:1-19
Monday, July 13, 2015

Good Example Being a parent is a huge responsibility. Parents provide food, clothing and shelter for their children. But that’s not all that parents should do for their children. Parents also need to set a good example for their children to follow.
The writer of Psalm 51 asked God to forgive his sin and make him clean again. “Because of your great compassion, erase all the wrongs I have done. Scrub away my guilt. Wash me clean from my sin” (verses 1b-2). An important part of being a parent is admitting that we sin and asking for forgiveness.
As parents, we need to set a good example of humility and forgiveness. When we make a mistake, we need to admit it and ask for forgiveness. When our children make mistakes, we need to love them and forgive them.
Teach someone about God’s great love and forgiveness through your example today. —LB

—JK

Sports
Bible Reading: Hebrews 12:1-3
Monday, July 6, 2015

Sports During the summer, many people in Iowa play baseball or run in a marathon. The nice weather is a perfect time to get outside and get some exercise.
If a person wants to run in a race, they need to train by running every day. They also need to focus on the goal of winning the race and not let other things distract them. In our Bible Reading today, the writer of Hebrews talks about running a race. But this is not a physical race. This is the race to receive the prize of eternal life with God.
These verses tell us several things we should do. First, we should try to remove sin from our lives. Second, we should “never stop looking to Jesus” (verse 2a). And third, we should think about Jesus so that we will not become discouraged.
I hope that you will always remember how much God loves you. Keep following Him every day, and never give up! —JK

Jesus' Blood (5)
Bible Reading: 1 John 1:5-10
Tuesday, May 5, 2015

Jesus' Blood (5) Jesus' blood is important because it cleanses us. 1 John 1:7b says, “If we live in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood sacrifice of Jesus, God's Son, washes away every sin and makes us clean.”
Recently my husband and I cleaned out our basement. At the end of the day, I was very dirty. There were cobwebs stuck in my hair and my hands and face were covered with dirt and scratches. I couldn't wait to get in the shower and be clean again.
In our last devotion we talked about being near to God. If we want to be near to God, we must first allow Jesus' blood to make us clean. Verse 9 of our Bible Reading tells us how this happens. “But if we confess our sins, God will forgive us. We can trust God to do this...He will make us clean from all the wrong things we have done.”
When we become a Christian, we are clean. But then we continue to sin. Praise God that we can confess our sins and allow Jesus' blood to cleanse us every day! —JK
“Come near to God and he will come near to you. You are sinners, so clean sin out of your lives.” James 4:8a

—MS

Confession
Bible Reading: Nehemiah 1:1-11
Tuesday, March 17, 2015

Confession When I hear about something bad that happened in my town, I am very sad. I am sad because I know the people who were affected by the tragedy. I may even wonder if I did something wrong to make this bad thing happen.
Our Bible Reading tells us about Nehemiah. He was a Jewish man from Jerusalem who was living in Persia. One day Nehemiah learned about something terrible that happened in Jerusalem. The walls of the city were broken down, and this was causing many problems for the people in Jerusalem.
Nehemiah felt sad for these people. He cried and prayed to God. Then he confessed to God that he and other Jews had disobeyed Him. “We Israelites have been very bad to you. We have not obeyed the commands, rules, and laws you gave your servant Moses” (verse 7).
When we confess our sins to God and ask Him to help us, we are clean again and have a new start. Ask God to forgive you and help you follow Him. —MS
“So, Lord, please listen to my prayer. And listen to the prayers of all your other servants who are happy to honor you.” Nehemiah 1:11a

Favorite Verses (2) There are times in my life that I feel like the Apostle Paul when he writes in 1 Timothy 1:15b, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and I am the worst of them.”
When I feel like I am the worst of sinners, then I think about verse 9 of our Bible Reading today. John says, “But if we confess our sins, God will forgive us. We can trust God to do this. He always does what is right. He will make us clean from all the wrong things we have done.”
Oh, how thankful I am that I can confess my sins to God. I am very thankful that God forgives me. And I am thankful that God makes me clean from all the wrong things I have done.
It is important to confess your sins. Be honest with God. He will forgive you. Trust Him to make you clean from all the wrong things you have done. —CPE*

Sin
Bible Reading: Acts 3:11-20
Tuesday, July 22, 2014

Sin I live in an area where there are high temperatures and humidity during the summer. When I become hot and uncomfortable, I find ways to cool off. One way is to go into my house and turn on the air conditioner.
When we sin, the Holy Spirit makes us feel uncomfortable. He wants us to confess our sins to God and turn back to Him. In our Bible Reading today, Peter told a crowd of people what they needed to do. Verses 19-20a tell us, “So you must change your hearts and lives. Come back to God, and he will forgive your sins. Then the Lord will give you times of spiritual rest.”
When it is hot and humid, the air conditioner makes me feel cool and comfortable. In the same way, when we confess our sins and ask God to forgive us, we feel refreshed and rested.
If you have sin in your life, talk to God today. Ask Him to forgive you and make you feel peaceful again. —PD
