Bible Animals (5)
Bible Reading: Luke 10:25-37
Thursday, May 19, 2016

In Bible times, many people rode donkeys. Our Bible story today tells about a man from Samaria who had a donkey.
The Jews and the Samaritans did not get along. If a Jew saw a Samaritan, he would avoid him and not speak to him. Jesus told a story about a Jewish man who was traveling. “Some robbers surrounded him, tore off his clothes, and beat him. Then they left him lying there on the ground almost dead” (verse 30b). Two Jewish men walked past the hurt man and did not help him.
Finally a man from Samaria came down the road. He felt sorry for the man. So he took care of the man's wounds and “put the hurt man on
his donkey, and he took him to an
inn. There he cared for him” (verse 34b). Even though these men were enemies, the Samaritan man stopped and helped the Jew.

We should help other people
— even those people who are our enemies. It is not easy to help a person that we do not like. But God will give us strength and wisdom so that we can obey His Word. —JK

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.” Luke 10:27b
PRAYER: God, fill me with Your love so I can love other people. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Goodness
Bible Reading: 2 Peter 1:3-9
Thursday, March 24, 2016

One of the first things parents tell their children is to be good. As children grow up, their parents tell them over and over again to be good. But, what does it mean to be good?
Sometimes being good means doing what is right. Often, being good means doing something extra. And other times, being good means doing a job well.
But the goodness that God gives us is different. God's goodness is His blessings that we can share with others. Verse 5b of our Bible Reading says, “to your faith add goodness.” We want to tell other people about our faith in God. But if we also share God's blessings with them, we show them God's love and greatness.

God works in our lives every day. He changes us to become better servants for Him. And He helps us share His goodness with others. —JM

“If all these things are in you and growing, you will never fail to be useful to God. You will produce the kind of fruit that should come from your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:8
PRAYER: Dear God, only You are truly good. Help me show Your goodness to others. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—DJH*

Helping Others
Bible Reading: Acts 9:36-40
Wednesday, January 27, 2016

Our Bible Reading today talks about a woman named Tabitha. She lived in the city of Joppa. Tabitha liked to help people. She gave money to people who needed it and made clothes for women whose husbands had died.
One day Tabitha became sick and died. The women that Tabitha had helped were very sad. The Christians in Joppa sent two men to find Peter and bring him to Tabitha's house. When Peter arrived the women were crying. They showed Peter the clothes that Tabitha had made for them.
“Peter sent all the people out of the room. He knelt down and prayed. Then he turned to Tabitha's body and said, ‘Tabitha, stand up!’ She opened her eyes. When she saw Peter, she sat up” (verse 40). Then Peter showed the people that Tabitha was alive.

Tabitha is a good example for us. We should be like her and help people who are poor. When we help others, we are sharing God's love with them. Look for ways today to help people in need. —DJH*

“People everywhere in Joppa learned about this, and many believed in the Lord.” Acts 9:42
PRAYER: Father, I want to be like Tabitha and help other people. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

—CPE*

Holy
Bible Reading: Isaiah 6:1-7
Monday, January 25, 2016

In our Bible Reading for today, the prophet Isaiah saw the Lord sitting on a very high and wonderful throne in the temple. The Lord was wearing a long robe that filled the temple. Isaiah also saw seraph angels around the Lord. The angels used their wings to cover their faces and bodies. I believe they did this because the Lord God is holy.
The same thing happened with Moses in Exodus 3. When God appeared to Moses in a burning bush, Moses covered his face (verse 6). Moses knew that God is holy.
After Isaiah saw the angels in the temple cover their faces and bodies, he heard them say to each other in Isaiah 6:3, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord All-Powerful. His Glory fills the whole earth.”

God is truly holy. He is perfect. God has never sinned. He can never sin. God loves everything that is pure and good and holy. Thanks to God and His forgiveness of our sins through His Son, Jesus, we can be holy, too. As His children, God wants us to live like Him. —CPE*

“Be holy in everything you do, just as God is holy. He is the one who chose you.” 1 Peter 1:15
PRAYER: God, You are holy, holy, holy. Thank You for forgiveness of my sins. In Jesus' name. Amen.

The King
Bible Reading: Psalm 45:1-17
Wednesday, December 26, 2012

The King Psalm 45 is written to a king. This king may have been Solomon. Solomon was an earthly king. However, some people think that this psalm may have been written about Jesus, who would come to earth many years later as our Heavenly King.
What does this psalm tell us about the king? First, He fights for goodness and fairness (verse 4a). Second, He does amazing things (verse 4b). Third, His kingdom continues forever (verse 6a). And finally, He loves goodness and hates evil (verse 7).
Verse 10 mentions a lady. This may be talking about the church, who is Jesus’ bride. Ephesians 5:27 says, “Christ died so that he could give the church to himself like a bride, full of glory (beauty).”
The last verse of this psalm says, “I will make your name famous forever. People will praise you forever and ever!” Truly Jesus’ name continues to be praised. Praise Him today for His goodness and love! —JK
“...your throne continues forever! Goodness is your royal scepter. You love goodness and you hate evil.” Psalm 45:6-7a
PRAYER: God, thank You for sending Jesus to be our King. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Psalm 119 (1)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:1-8
Sunday, October 7, 2012

Psalm 119 (1)
Today we will begin a series of devotions based on Psalm 119. This chapter has more verses than any other chapter in the Bible. If you look at this chapter in a printed Bible, you will see that it is divided into 22 sections. Each section begins with a different letter from the Hebrew alphabet.
Verses 1-2 of our Bible Reading say, “People living pure lives are happy. Those people follow the Lord’s teachings. People who obey the Lord’s Agreement are happy. They obey the Lord with all their heart.” God blesses us when we obey Him. And following God makes us happy.
The Bible says that all people have sinned and disobeyed God. But verse 7 tells us that God is fair and good. He has given us a way to have our sins forgiven through His Son, Jesus.
Do you want to be happy? Then follow God’s plan for your life. Love and obey Him today. —PD

“Lord, you gave us your commands. And you told us to obey those commands completely. If I always obey your laws, Lord, then I will never be ashamed when I study your commands.” Psalm 119:4-6

PRAYER: Father, I want to obey You. Thank You for forgiveness through Jesus. In His name. Amen.

...Goodness
Bible Reading: Job 1:1-12
Thursday, August 23, 2012

Goodness Galatians, chapter 5, tells us that the next thing the Spirit gives is goodness. Sometimes on a TV program we see a child who wants to do what is good and right. Other children try to encourage that child to do what is wrong. They call the good child bad names and tease him. We feel sorry for that child. But God wants us to act like this child. God wants us to hate the bad things in the world and do what is good and right.
Job was a man who was full of goodness. Our Bible Reading says that he was a good, faithful man. Job worshiped God and refused to do evil things. God allowed the devil to do terrible things to Job — he lost his children, his home and his possessions. But Job still followed God. Later God blessed Job with much more than he had before.
Today we need to be like Job. We should hate the evil things around us. We should protect things that are right and good. People may do bad things to us, but God will take care of us. God took care of Job and blessed him for his goodness. God will bless and take care of you, too. —JK

“Hate the things that are evil. Do only the things that are good.” Romans 12:9b

PRAYER: Father in heaven, help me to be like Job. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
