—ECW

Love Your Enemies
Bible Reading: Matthew 5:43-48
Monday, November 14, 2016

In 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley, Jr. Several years later, President Reagan said that he had forgiven Mr. Hinckley and wanted to meet with him in person to tell him about his forgiveness. I think that is a good example of what Jesus talked about in our Bible Reading today. In verses 43 and 44 Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies. Pray for those who treat you badly.” Jesus went on to add, “...if you are nice only to your friends, you are no better than anyone else. Even the people who don't know God are nice to their friends” (verse 47).
Sometimes it is very hard to forgive our enemies and show them kindness. But that is what God wants us to do. Think about someone today who needs to receive your love and forgiveness. Ask God to help you show kindness to that person. —ECW

“But I say to you people who are listening to me, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you...Pray for the people who are mean to you.” Luke 6:27-28

—CW*

Summer (4)
Bible Reading: Psalm 103:1-13
Monday, July 18, 2016

One summer day when I was a child, I played near our basement window. I was not paying attention to what I was doing, and I accidently broke the window. I was afraid to tell my parents about the window. I even thought about pretending that I knew nothing about it. But I felt guilty, so I told my mother what I had done. She said I would have to tell my dad when he came home.
When Dad came home, I did not see him. Later I checked the window, and it had been repaired! My parents had talked about the window and decided not to punish me. They never mentioned the broken window again!
My parents were forgiving. Our Bible Reading today reminds us that God is forgiving, too. Verse 10 says, “We sinned against him, but he didn't give us the punishment we deserved.” I am so thankful that God loves and forgives me. I hope you are thankful, too. —CW*

“And he has taken our sins as far away from us as the east is from the west.” Psalm 103:12
PRAYER: God, please forgive my sins. Help me to be obedient to You today. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Simple Prayers (1)
Bible Reading: Acts 7:54-60
Friday, November 6, 2015

When we pray to God, our prayers do not have to be long and fancy. We can just pray simple prayers. Today we will begin to look at some simple prayers in the Bible.

Stephen was chosen to help serve in the early church in Jerusalem. Acts 6:5 tells us that he was “a man with great faith and full of the Holy Spirit.” Also, God gave Stephen “power to do great wonders and miraculous signs among the people” (Acts 6:8).

Stephen preached about Jesus. Our Bible Reading tells us that some people said that Stephen was speaking against God. They became angry and “began throwing stones at him” (verse 58b). How did Stephen respond? He prayed this prayer (verse 60b), “Lord, don’t blame them for this sin!

Stephen forgave the people who were killing him. Maybe there is someone in your life that you need to forgive. Ask God to help you forgive that person. Pray Stephen’s simple prayer. God will pay attention to you. —DF
Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.’”
 Luke 23:34
PRAYER: Father, thank You for forgiving me. Help me to forgive others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Good Example
Bible Reading: Psalm 51:1-19
Monday, July 13, 2015

Good Example Being a parent is a huge responsibility. Parents provide food, clothing and shelter for their children. But that’s not all that parents should do for their children. Parents also need to set a good example for their children to follow.
The writer of Psalm 51 asked God to forgive his sin and make him clean again. “Because of your great compassion, erase all the wrongs I have done. Scrub away my guilt. Wash me clean from my sin” (verses 1b-2). An important part of being a parent is admitting that we sin and asking for forgiveness.
As parents, we need to set a good example of humility and forgiveness. When we make a mistake, we need to admit it and ask for forgiveness. When our children make mistakes, we need to love them and forgive them.
Teach someone about God’s great love and forgiveness through your example today. —LB

Proverbs (4)
Bible Reading: Proverbs 4:13-27
Saturday, October 25, 2014

Proverbs (4) Many people today remind us that we need to protect ourselves from physical sicknesses. The world is full of things that can hurt us or make us sick. But there are also other things that can hurt us mentally and spiritually.
If someone says something bad about us or hurts our feelings, we may become angry and want to hurt them back. When we refuse to forgive someone, our bad thoughts control our bodies. Then we may become depressed or get sick easily. We need to remember that we need to keep our hearts and minds clean, too.
Following God and His Word will help us have healthy bodies, hearts and minds. Solomon's words today teach us to stay away from evil and close to God. “Don't take the path of the wicked; don't follow those who do evil. Stay away from that path; don't even go near it. Turn around and go another way” (verse 14-15).
Be careful to guard your body, your heart and your mind today. Follow God and His Word. —KP
“Above all, be careful what you think because your thoughts control your life. Make sure you are going the right way, and nothing will make you fall.” Proverbs 4:23,26

Philemon
Bible Reading: Philemon 1-25
Tuesday, October 14, 2014

Philemon The book of Philemon is very short — it is only 25 verses. It is a letter that Paul wrote to a Christian man named Philemon.
Philemon's servant, Onesimus, had run away. Onesimus went to see Paul. Onesimus became a Christian while he was staying with Paul. He also became Paul's friend and helper.
But now it was time for Onesimus to go home to his master, Philemon. Paul wrote this letter to Philemon to tell him that Onesimus had become a Christian. In verses 17 and 18 of our Bible Reading Paul told Philemon, “If you accept me as your friend, then accept Onesimus back. Welcome him like you would welcome me. If he has done any wrong to you or owes you anything, charge it to me.” Paul wanted Philemon to forgive Onesimus and welcome him home.
This short book teaches us that we should pray for, encourage, forgive and love each other. Ask God to help you do these things today. —GT

—CW*

Letter to Ephesus (4)
Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:26-32
Saturday, September 27, 2014

Letter to Ephesus (4) Paul gave the Ephesian Christians advice on how to get along with each other. One thing Paul talked about was anger.
In verses 26 and 27 Paul said, “‘When you are angry, don't let that anger make you sin,' and don't stay angry all day. Don't give the devil a way to defeat you.” Paul wanted these Christians to settle their problems quickly and peacefully. He told them that if they stayed angry, that gave the devil a chance to tempt them to sin.
Then Paul reminded the Ephesian Christians to do things that will encourage others. If we follow that advice, we will not hurt other people or say bad things that we will regret later. Instead, we will quickly forgive people and not give the devil time to encourage us to sin.
If you become angry with someone today, follow Paul's advice. Be loving, kind and forgiving. —CW*

-BP*

Forgiveness
Bible Reading: Matthew 6:9-15
Tuesday, July 15, 2014

Forgiveness You may find it hard to forgive some people. Maybe someone in your family has abused you. Or maybe your husband or wife has been unfaithful to you. In situations like this, it may be difficult to forgive.
I read about a Christian man who was in a theater when a gunman started shooting at the crowd. The man was injured by the shooter. But he said he forgave the man who shot him.
In our Bible verses Jesus said that if we want God to forgive us, we need to forgive other people. Sometimes it is very hard to say, “I forgive you.” But when we truly forgive others, we get rid of the hurt and anger inside us.
Maybe there is someone who has hurt you. Ask God to help you love and forgive that person. Then contact them and tell them, “I forgive you!” Forgiving that person will give you peace in your life. —BP*
“Yes, if you forgive others for the wrongs they do to you, then your Father in heaven will also forgive your wrongs. But if you don’t forgive others, then your Father in heaven will not forgive the wrongs you do.” Matthew 6:14-15

Thursday, January 9, 2014

WDJD (9) Sometimes we feel that we cannot forgive people who have hurt us. When Jesus was on the cross, He gave us a wonderful example of forgiveness.
Before Jesus was put on a cross, people did terrible things to Him. They hit Him, spit on Him, mocked Him, and put a crown of thorns on His head. If people did those things to you, how would you feel? What would you do?
Our Bible Reading today tells us what Jesus did. He didn’t shout at the people or ask God to destroy them. Jesus didn’t say bad things about the people or try to hit them back. Jesus forgave! Verse 34 says, “Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.’”
Jesus was in terrible pain. He was ready to die. But Jesus still forgave the people who were hurting Him. Maybe someone will lie about you today or say bad things to you. Will you get mad and say bad things back to them? Or will you be like Jesus and forgive? —JK

Pardon
Bible Reading: Romans 6:15-23
Monday, October 21, 2013

Pardon Sometimes we see on the news that a president or governor has pardoned a prisoner. This means that the prisoner is forgiven, and he is free to leave prison.
When I became a Christian, God pardoned me. He forgave my sins and freed me from being a slave to sin. Verses 17 and 18 of our Bible Reading say, “In the past you were slaves to sin — sin controlled you. But thank God, you fully obeyed what you were taught. You were made free from sin, and now you are slaves to what is right.”
Many people in the world know that they disobey God, and they feel guilty for their sins. But they are confused. They do not know what to do to remove their sins. Verse 23 gives these people an answer. “When people sin, they earn what sin pays — death. But God gives his people a free gift — eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

—BL

Forgiving Others
Bible Reading: Hebrews 10:16-25
Monday, August 12, 2013

Forgiving Others When someone hurts me, I sometimes think of how I can hurt them back. Probably all of us struggle with forgiving other people. Usually we can forgive them, but we don’t want to.
When someone hurts us, we may want to see them suffer, just like we did. But true forgiveness means that instead of making them suffer, we forgive them for what they did. Suppose someone hurts me and I grab them by the neck and shake them. Then I say, “I forgive you.” I am not doing what Jesus would do. I am not truly forgiving them.
Verse 17 of our Bible Reading says that God will forget people’s sins and “never again remember the evil they have done.” We need to be like that when we forgive people who have hurt us.
Maybe someone will hurt you today. What will you do? Will you do something bad back to them? Or will you be like Jesus and be loving and forgiving? —BL
