Joy to the World (1)
Bible Reading: Psalm 98:1-9
Sunday, December 6, 2015

Joy to the World (1) One of the most popular songs people sing at Christmas is “Joy to the World.” Verse 4 of our Bible Reading today says, “Everyone on earth, shout with joy to the Lord. Start singing happy songs of praise!”
I am a deaf person so I know it can be difficult to understand music and singing. The book of Psalms often talks about “singing” and “making music to the Lord.” That tells me God enjoys listening to our songs of praise. Singing is one way Christians worship God.
So how can we sing to the Lord when it feels strange? Ephesians 5:19 says, “Encourage each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord.” We can ask God to fill our hearts with music while we sign praises to the Lord in worship!
People have always shared joyful praises when they think about the birth of Jesus. During this Christmas season, allow God to fill your heart with joy and song while you celebrate the birth of His Son. —JB*
“I will shout for joy, singing songs of praise to you for saving me.” Psalm 71:23
PRAYER: Thank You, Lord, for putting songs of praise in my heart. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Bible Reading: Psalm 136:1-26
Sunday, November 11, 2012

Psalms Music (7) King David chose the music groups to play for the Israelites’ worship (1 Chronicles, chapter 25). 2 Chronicles 7:6a says, “The priests stood ready to do their work. The Levites also stood with the instruments of the Lord’s music. These instruments were made by King David to give thanks to the Lord.”
2 Chronicles, chapter 5, tells us about when the temple was dedicated. The singers were dressed in white linen (verse 12). Trumpets, cymbals and other instruments were used (verse 13), and they sang the song, “Praise the Lord Because He is Good. His True Love Continues Forever” (verse 13). Those are the same words as Psalm 136:1.
David was very careful to make sure that the Israelites worshiped God in the right way. He wrote psalms (songs), made musical instruments and chose the musicians. David wanted to honor and praise God.
Find ways today to show your honor and praise to God. —DF

Psalms Music (4)
Bible Reading: Psalm 137:1-9
Thursday, November 8, 2012

Psalms Music (4) Yesterday we learned how stringed instruments were used for times of praise, worship and happiness. Today we will learn about other ways that stringed instruments were used.
Psalm 49:4 says, “I myself listened to the stories. And now, with my harp, I will sing and reveal that message to you.” Sometimes musicians would play the harp as they shared a message or told the meaning of a riddle. And, 1 Samuel 16:23 tells us that David played the harp to make King Saul feel better. “Any time the bad spirit from God came on Saul, David would take his harp and play it. The bad spirit would leave Saul and he would begin to feel better.”
Our Bible Reading today talks about the time when the Israelites were in captivity in Babylon. They were sad because they could not worship God in the temple. So, they hung their “harps on the willow trees nearby” (verse 2).
These verses remind me to be thankful that I can worship and honor God today. —DF
“I will praise the Lord all my life. I will sing praises to him all my life.” Psalm 146:2
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I praise and thank You! In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Psalms Music (1)
Bible Reading: Psalm 24:1-10
Monday, November 5, 2012

Psalms Music (1) The psalms we read in our Bible were written to be sung by the Israelites in their temple worship. These songs helped them share their feelings with God. Our Bible Reading today was one of the psalms used every week in temple worship. For the next few days, we will look at verses in Psalms that talk about music.
The Bible shows us that music is a very important way to praise and thank God. It was also common for the Israelites to write songs about an important event in their lives. In Exodus 15, we find a song that Moses and the Israelites sang after God helped them cross the Red Sea. Both Hannah (1 Samuel 2) and Mary (Luke 1) sang songs of praise to God.
In his letters in the New Testament, Paul encouraged Christians to sing. And in Revelation 5:9 we read that the 24 elders “sang a new song” to the Lamb (Jesus). It is wonderful to think about all Christians (both deaf and hearing) singing together in heaven!
Praise God today because He is our “glorious King” (verse 10)! —DF
“The earth and everything on it belong to the Lord. The world and all its people belong to him.” Psalm 24:1
PRAYER: God, our King, we love You and praise You. In Jesus’ name.
