Psalm 119 (1)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:1-8
Thursday, September 1, 2016

Over the next few months, I will be sharing some thoughts from Psalms, chapter 119.
Psalm 119 emphasizes the importance of God and His Word, the Bible. Verse 2 of our Bible Reading today tells us that people who follow God's rules “seek him with all their heart.” The next six verses tell us how these people seek God. These people follow God’s ways (verse 3) and obey them (verse 4). These people also want to be more faithful to God (verse 5) and to praise Him (verse 7).
The writer of this psalm ends this section by saying, “I will obey your laws, so please don't leave me!” We should always want God to be close to us. Sometimes we can feel overwhelmed and wonder if God is really with us. But our Bible verses assure us that if we seek God, He will be with us.
Do you want to serve God? Do you want God to be close to you? Then study His Word and be faithful to Him. —BH

“...you will look for the Lord your God...if you look for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him.” Deuteronomy 4:29b
PRAYER: Dear Lord, I want to always obey Your Word and be faithful to You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—ECW

Asaph
Bible Reading: Psalm 50:1-23
Saturday June 1, 2013

Asaph Our Bible Reading today is a song written by a man named Asaph. This is probably the same man mentioned in 1 Chronicles 16:5-7.
Asaph was a Levite. Members of this tribe took care of the temple and Israelite worship services. 1 Chronicles 16:5 says that Asaph was the leader of a group who played musical instruments for worship. 1 Chronicles 16:7 tells us that David chose Asaph and his brothers to sing praises to God.
Asaph wrote this song to praise God. But he also wrote these verses to remind the Israelites that they should obey God. God said that they had disobeyed Him by ignoring His commands, saying evil things and telling lies (verses 16-19). But in verse 21, God said, “...I will not be quiet any longer. I will correct you and make clear what I have against you.”
The Israelites sang Psalm 50 as they worshiped God. This song reminded them to obey God. And these verses should encourage us, too, to stay close to God. —ECW
“Whoever decides to live right will see my power to save.” Psalm 50:23b
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I want to serve and obey You today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Psalms Music (7)
Bible Reading: Psalm 136:1-26
Sunday, November 11, 2012

Psalms Music (7) King David chose the music groups to play for the Israelites’ worship (1 Chronicles, chapter 25). 2 Chronicles 7:6a says, “The priests stood ready to do their work. The Levites also stood with the instruments of the Lord’s music. These instruments were made by King David to give thanks to the Lord.”
2 Chronicles, chapter 5, tells us about when the temple was dedicated. The singers were dressed in white linen (verse 12). Trumpets, cymbals and other instruments were used (verse 13), and they sang the song, “Praise the Lord Because He is Good. His True Love Continues Forever” (verse 13). Those are the same words as Psalm 136:1.
David was very careful to make sure that the Israelites worshiped God in the right way. He wrote psalms (songs), made musical instruments and chose the musicians. David wanted to honor and praise God.
Find ways today to show your honor and praise to God. —DF
“Praise the God of heaven! His true love continues forever.”Psalm 136:26

—DF

Bible Reading: Psalm 149:1-9
Saturday, November 10, 2012

Psalms Music (6) The Israelites also had instruments that would beat out the rhythm of a song. Verse 3 of our Bible Reading mentions a tambourine. This was a small drum made of wood and skins. Most of the time, women played tambourines. They were used for dances and to celebrate good times.
Some of the most important instruments used in temple worship were the cymbals. Psalm 150:5 says, “Praise God with loud cymbals! Praise him with clashing cymbals!” Clashing cymbals were large and played with one on each hand. The resounding cymbals were much smaller and were worn on the thumb and middle fingers.
All of the instruments and musicians were important to the temple music. In the same way, each of us is important to the church. Some Christians are teachers or singers, while others work in the nursery or visit sick people. Every job in the church is important.
Praise God today for what you can do for His kingdom. —DF

—DF

Psalms Music (5)
Bible Reading: Psalm 47:1-9
Friday, November 9, 2012

Psalms Music (5) The trumpet was used for many things in Bible times. In this psalm, we read that trumpets announced that God was on His throne.
Trumpets were used during times of celebration such as feasts and festivals. They were played when people brought their offerings to God. And, trumpets were sounded to call people to worship, to announce the start of a battle or when God was ready to judge His people. The first trumpets were curved rams’ horns. Later trumpets were made from silver and shaped like a long tube.
Verses 16-17 of 1 Thessalonians, chapter 4, tell us about the time when Jesus will return. Jesus will give a command, and that “command will be given with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God.” That trumpet will be a wonderful sound for all Christians!
I hope that you are ready for Jesus to come and take His followers to live forever with Him. —DF

—DF

Psalms Music (4)
Bible Reading: Psalm 137:1-9
Thursday, November 8, 2012

Psalms Music (4) Yesterday we learned how stringed instruments were used for times of praise, worship and happiness. Today we will learn about other ways that stringed instruments were used.
Psalm 49:4 says, “I myself listened to the stories. And now, with my harp, I will sing and reveal that message to you.” Sometimes musicians would play the harp as they shared a message or told the meaning of a riddle. And, 1 Samuel 16:23 tells us that David played the harp to make King Saul feel better. “Any time the bad spirit from God came on Saul, David would take his harp and play it. The bad spirit would leave Saul and he would begin to feel better.”
Our Bible Reading today talks about the time when the Israelites were in captivity in Babylon. They were sad because they could not worship God in the temple. So, they hung their “harps on the willow trees nearby” (verse 2).
These verses remind me to be thankful that I can worship and honor God today. —DF
“I will praise the Lord all my life. I will sing praises to him all my life.” Psalm 146:2
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I praise and thank You! In Jesus’ name. Amen.

—DF

Psalms Music (3)
Bible Reading: Psalm 43:1-5
Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Psalms Music (3) The Book of Psalms shows us that stringed instruments were also used to praise God. Verse 4 of our Bible Reading today says, “I will come to God’s altar. I will come to the God who makes me so very happy. God, my God, I will praise you with a harp.”
The harp and lyre were stringed instruments that were very important in temple worship. The harp was made of wood and had 10-12 strings. It was played with the fingers and gave off a loud sound. A lyre was smaller than a harp and played with a tool called a plectrum. A lyre had 5-10 strings.
Many other verses in Psalms mention stringed instruments. Psalm 98:5-6 says, “Every person on earth, shout with joy to the Lord. Quickly, start singing songs of praise! Harps, praise the Lord. Music from the harps, praise him.”
So far, we have talked about praising God by singing, dancing and playing instruments. Wow! There are many different ways that we can show God our love and thanks. —DF

Bible Reading: Psalm 30:1-12
Tuesday, November 6, 2012

Psalms Music (2) Dancing was another way that the Israelites worshiped and praised God. Usually women danced while other people sang. Men would also dance, but men and women did not dance together.
Dancing was a way to show happiness and praise. The Israelites danced to thank God for His blessings and protection. Psalm 149:3 says, “Let those people praise God by dancing and playing their tambourines and harps.” (Tambourines and harps are musical instruments.) And Psalm 150:4a tells us to praise God “with tambourines and dancing!”
Verse 11 of our Bible Reading says, “I prayed and you helped me! You changed my crying into dancing.” It is wonderful that God is always with us, and that He knows when we are sad. When we think about all God has done for us, we can be happy even when we are facing bad things in our life.
Take time to think about how God has blessed your life. —DF

Bible Reading: Psalm 24:1-10
Monday, November 5, 2012

Psalms Music (1) The psalms we read in our Bible were written to be sung by the Israelites in their temple worship. These songs helped them share their feelings with God. Our Bible Reading today was one of the psalms used every week in temple worship. For the next few days, we will look at verses in Psalms that talk about music.
The Bible shows us that music is a very important way to praise and thank God. It was also common for the Israelites to write songs about an important event in their lives. In Exodus 15, we find a song that Moses and the Israelites sang after God helped them cross the Red Sea. Both Hannah (1 Samuel 2) and Mary (Luke 1) sang songs of praise to God.
In his letters in the New Testament, Paul encouraged Christians to sing. And in Revelation 5:9 we read that the 24 elders “sang a new song” to the Lamb (Jesus). It is wonderful to think about all Christians (both deaf and hearing) singing together in heaven!
Praise God today because He is our “glorious King” (verse 10)! —DF
“The earth and everything on it belong to the Lord. The world and all its people belong to him.” Psalm 24:1
PRAYER: God, our King, we love You and praise You. In Jesus’ name.
