Mary, Lazarus’ Sister
Bible Reading: Luke 10:38-42
Sunday, January 31, 2016

In our Bible Reading for today, we learn about Mary, who was a sister to Lazarus. Jesus came to their house, and Mary's sister, Martha, was busy preparing for Jesus to stay at their house.
But where was Mary? Verse 39b tells us that Mary “was sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to him teach.” When Martha complained that Mary was not helping her, Jesus said that Mary had made the right choice to sit and listen to Him.

John 12:3 tells us that Mary brought perfume and poured it on Jesus' feet. This was Mary's way of worshiping Jesus and showing Him her love. Jesus said that this helped prepare Him for his death and burial.
Wherever we read about Mary in the New Testament, we see that she learned from Jesus and worshiped Him. That is a good example for us. Do we show Jesus how much we love Him? Are we willing to take time to read and study His Word? Be like Mary today. Honor Jesus with your love and your obedience. —BH

“Only one thing is important. Mary has made the right choice, and it will never be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42
PRAYER: Father, I choose to worship and love You today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Mary, Jesus' Mother
Bible Reading: Luke 2:25-35
Saturday, January 30, 2016

There are three women mentioned in the New Testament who are named Mary. Today and for the next two days we will learn about these women.

Today's Bible Reading is about Mary, the mother of Jesus. After Jesus was born, Joseph and Mary took baby Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to “present him to the Lord” (Luke 2:22). While they were there, they met a man named Simeon.
Simeon talked to Mary about Jesus. In verse 35b, Simeon said that “things that happen will be painful for you — like a sword cutting through your heart.” God gave Simeon these words of prophecy. These words were talking about times during Jesus' ministry when people would say bad things about Him and do bad things to Him. It must have been very hard for Mary to watch her son die on the cross!

Mary was an amazing woman who loved God and faithfully served Him. She is an example of how we should give our lives to God. —BH

“Mary said, ‘I am the servant of the Lord God. Let this thing you have said happen to me!'” Luke 1:38a
PRAYER: Dear God, thank You for Mary. Her life encourages me to live for You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—MC*

Power of Prayer
Bible Reading: James 5:13-18
Friday, January 29, 2016

I went to an international conference on missions. There they had a “wall of prayer.” Written on a wall were the names of different countries and missions around the world.
I was very touched to read about all the missions in the world. I prayed for people in these countries who do not know Jesus. I prayed especially for people in my home country of Chile. I want people in Chile to know about Jesus and His wonderful gift of salvation.

Our Bible verses today show us that prayer is very important. James gives the example of Elijah who prayed for rain, and it happened. James also reminds us that we should pray when we are having troubles, when we are sick, or when we are struggling with sin.

Spend time in prayer today. Pray for people around the world who do not know Jesus. And pray for Christians who have problems or are sick. God will pay attention to your prayers! —MC*

“Anyone who lives the way God wants can pray, and great things will happen.” James 5:16b
PRAYER: Father, thank You that I can pray to You every day. And thank You for always paying attention to my prayers. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Faith
Bible Reading: Hebrews 11:1-3
Thursday, January 28, 2016

I heard a story about a man who dropped his wallet down a dry well. The man was too large to fit in the well so he asked his son to get the wallet.
The man carefully measured a rope and gave it to his son. Then the son climbed down the rope into the well. When the son was at the end of the rope, he became worried and shouted to his father. The man said, “You can let go of the rope now and fall to the floor.” But the son was afraid and would not let go. Finally, the son became so tired that his hands let go of the rope. He fell about 3 inches to the floor where he found the wallet! The son was embarrassed that he did not have faith in his father.

Our Bible verses today remind us that we need to have faith in God. If we have faith in God, He will be pleased with us, and we will understand more about Him.
Have faith in God today. Trust Him to take care of you. —BF*

—DJH*

Helping Others
Bible Reading: Acts 9:36-40
Wednesday, January 27, 2016

Our Bible Reading today talks about a woman named Tabitha. She lived in the city of Joppa. Tabitha liked to help people. She gave money to people who needed it and made clothes for women whose husbands had died.
One day Tabitha became sick and died. The women that Tabitha had helped were very sad. The Christians in Joppa sent two men to find Peter and bring him to Tabitha's house. When Peter arrived the women were crying. They showed Peter the clothes that Tabitha had made for them.
“Peter sent all the people out of the room. He knelt down and prayed. Then he turned to Tabitha's body and said, ‘Tabitha, stand up!’ She opened her eyes. When she saw Peter, she sat up” (verse 40). Then Peter showed the people that Tabitha was alive.

Tabitha is a good example for us. We should be like her and help people who are poor. When we help others, we are sharing God's love with them. Look for ways today to help people in need. —DJH*

“People everywhere in Joppa learned about this, and many believed in the Lord.” Acts 9:42

—CPE*

Merciful
Bible Reading: Ephesians 2:4-7
Tuesday, January 26, 2016

In our Bible Reading for today, Paul talks about God's great mercy. Even though we are dead in our sins and far from perfect, God still loves us. That is mercy!
God showed His great mercy to us when He sent His Son, Jesus, to come into this world and die on the cross for our sins. 1 John 4:10 says, “True love is God's love for us, not our love for God. He sent his Son as the way to take away our sins.” God could have let us die as punishment for our sins. He could have decided not to save us. But God chose to be merciful. He chose to save us even though we do not deserve it!

God also shows His mercy to us everyday when we ask Him for forgiveness of our sins. Hebrews 4:16 says, “With Jesus as our high priest, we can feel free to come before God's throne where there is grace. There we receive mercy and kindness to help us when we need it.” Praise God that we, as Christians, can experience His mercy every day!
How wonderful is His mercy! —CPE*

“But God is rich in mercy, and he loved us very much.” Ephesians 2:4
PRAYER: Dear God, even though I don't deserve it, thank You for showing me mercy. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—CPE*

Holy
Bible Reading: Isaiah 6:1-7
Monday, January 25, 2016

In our Bible Reading for today, the prophet Isaiah saw the Lord sitting on a very high and wonderful throne in the temple. The Lord was wearing a long robe that filled the temple. Isaiah also saw seraph angels around the Lord. The angels used their wings to cover their faces and bodies. I believe they did this because the Lord God is holy.
The same thing happened with Moses in Exodus 3. When God appeared to Moses in a burning bush, Moses covered his face (verse 6). Moses knew that God is holy.
After Isaiah saw the angels in the temple cover their faces and bodies, he heard them say to each other in Isaiah 6:3, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord All-Powerful. His Glory fills the whole earth.”

God is truly holy. He is perfect. God has never sinned. He can never sin. God loves everything that is pure and good and holy. Thanks to God and His forgiveness of our sins through His Son, Jesus, we can be holy, too. As His children, God wants us to live like Him. —CPE*

“Be holy in everything you do, just as God is holy. He is the one who chose you.” 1 Peter 1:15

—CPE*

Omniscient
Bible Reading: Matthew 10:26-31
Sunday, January 24, 2016

God knows everything! The word omniscient means “having complete knowledge, awareness or understanding.”
Paul praised God for His knowledge in Romans 11:33b, “His wisdom and knowledge have no end!” And in Psalm 147:5, King David praised God by saying, “Our Lord is great, and he is very powerful. There is no limit to what he knows.”

God's knowledge is truly unlimited! Jesus says in our Bible Reading that God knows when little birds die and how many hairs are on your head. Do you know how many hairs are on your head? I don’t! But God does!
God also knows what we are thinking and doing at this exact moment! Psalm 139:2-4 says, “You know when I sit down and when I get up. You know my thoughts from far away. You know where I go and where I lie down. You know everything I do. Lord, you know what I want to say, even before the words leave my mouth.” WOW! God truly knows everything!

—CPE*

Omnipresent
Bible Reading: Psalm 139:7-10
Saturday, January 23, 2016

God can be everywhere at the same time! We use the word omnipresent to describe this. Omnipresent means “present everywhere at the same time.”

In Jeremiah 23:23-24, we read, “This message is from the LORD. ‘I am God, and I am always near. I am not far away. Someone might try to hide from me in some hiding place. But it is easy for me to see that person, says the Lord, because I am everywhere in heaven and earth.’
King David also talked about God being omnipresent. In our Bible verses, David could not think of any place where he could be apart from the love and care of God. The Apostle Paul talked about God being everywhere because He wants us to look for and find Him. In Acts 17:27-28a, Paul tells the non-Christians in Athens, Greece, “God wanted people to look for him...he is not far from any of us.”

—CPE*

Omnipotent
Bible Reading: Revelation 19:1-10
Friday, January 22, 2016

In this devotion and the next few devotions, we will learn about God's character. One word to describe God's character is omnipotent. Omnipotent means “having unlimited authority or power.” There is no limit to God's power!
In the first book of the Bible, God talked about His power. God told Abram in Genesis 17:1a, “I am God All-Powerful!” God told Abram that there is no limit to His power. The last book of the Bible tells us about God's power, too. In Revelation 19:6, a large crowd of people said, “Hallelujah! Our Lord God rules. He is the All-Powerful.” God's Son, Jesus, also talked about His power. In Matthew 19:26b Jesus said, “…God can do anything.” It is God's power that created the world in the beginning. It was with this same power that God has done miracles. And God raised Jesus from the dead. God can truly do anything!

God is omnipotent! Depend on His power today! —CPE*

PRAYER: Dear God, You are All-Powerful. I rejoice and give You all the glory and honor. In Jesus' name. Amen.
