Being Like God
Bible Reading: 2 Peter 1:3-8
Sunday, November 30, 2014

Being Like God God wants us to be like Him. In our Bible Reading today, Peter tells us that Jesus has given us some wonderful gifts. With these gifts we “can share in being like God” (verse 4b). Because we have these gifts, we “will escape the ruin that comes to people in the world because of the evil things they want” (verse 4b).
Then Peter says that we should add these things to our lives: faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, patience, devotion to God, kindness and love. If these things are growing in our lives, we “will never fail to be useful to God” (verse 8b).
How can we add these things to our lives? Every day we should look for ways to do good things for other people, to control ourselves when we are tempted to do something wrong, to be patient with other people and to be kind and loving.
I want to do these things and be like God. I hope you want to be like God, too! —DJH*
“If you do all this, you will never fall. And you will be given a very great welcome into the kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, a kingdom that never ends.”2 Peter 1:10b-11
PRAYER: God, I want to be more like You every day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

God Chose You
Bible Reading: 1 Peter 2:1-10
Saturday, November 29, 2014

God Chose You I have several friends who are missionaries, ministers or some kind of specialized Christian workers. I have always thought that they were the only people who could show others how to become Christians.
But then I read the verses in our Bible Reading for today. Verse 9b says, “He chose you to tell about the wonderful things he has done.” God has chosen each one of us to tell other people how He has changed our lives. We don’t need to make a formal speech. We can just sit down with someone and tell them how Jesus has touched our lives.
And when we tell someone how God has changed us, we should also remember to thank God and praise Him. Why? Because God has bought us “out of the darkness of sin and into his wonderful light” (verse 9b).
Tell someone today what God has done for you. And don’t forget to thank God for His wonderful gift of salvation through Jesus. —BH
“But you are his chosen people, the King’s priests. You are a holy nation, people who belong to God. In the past you were not a special people, but now you are God’s people.”1 Peter 2:9a,10a
PRAYER: Father, thank You for saving me. I look forward to telling others about You. In Jesus’ name.

-NM

Loving Others
Bible Reading: Colossians 3:12-17
Friday, November 28, 2014

Loving Others Carolyn’s husband, Steve, had four strokes. Each stroke was worse than the one before. Finally, Steve’s brain was damaged. Carolyn had health problems, too, but she had to keep working so they would have insurance. Carolyn had to hire a person to take care of Steve while she was at work.
In our Bible Reading today, Paul encourages us to act like God’s holy people. “Show mercy to others. Be kind, humble, gentle, and patient” (verse 12b). We can do those things by helping people like Steve and Carolyn.
There are probably people you know who take care of their family members. Often these caregivers do not eat well or get enough sleep. We can pray for these people. But maybe we need to do more. We can take care of the sick person so the caregiver can have some rest. We can take meals to them or just visit with them for a short time.
Look for ways today to show God’s love to other people! —NM

—NW

Giving Thanks (6)
Bible Reading: John 14:6-14
Thursday, November 27, 2014

Giving Thanks (6) If you live in the United States, today is Thanksgiving Day. I hope that you will give thanks to God, no matter where you live.
Our last question about giving thanks is: How should we give thanks? First, I think we need to remember that the only way to God is through Jesus. Verse 6 of our Bible Reading says, “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me.’” When we pray to God and thank Him, we should do it in Jesus’ name.
Second, our thanks should not only be spoken or signed. Our thanks should come from our hearts. If we are truly thankful, we will show our thankfulness through obeying God. If we pray and try to obey God’s Word, we show Him that we are thankful.
I hope you will take time to think about giving thanks to God. And I hope that you will be thankful to God every day of the year. —NW
“You must depend on Christ only, drawing life and strength from him. Just as you were taught the truth, continue to grow stronger in your understanding of it. And never stop giving thanks to God.” Colossians 2:7

—NW

Giving Thanks (5)
Bible Reading: Psalm 107:1-9
Wednesday, November 26, 2014

Giving Thanks (5) We have discussed four questions about giving thanks. Maybe now you are thinking, “Why should we give thanks?” That is a good question, and the answer is very clear in the Bible.
Psalm 107:2 tells people who are saved to praise and thank the Lord. So we should give thanks because God has commanded it. Many times the Bible reminds Christians to be thankful.
It is an honor to give thanks to God. God has blessed us so much. It is right for us to give thanks to Him. We should be happy to have the opportunity to thank God for all He has done.
In Romans, chapter 1, Paul talks about God being angry with people. What bad thing did these people do? Romans 1:21 says, “People knew God, but they did not honor him as God, and they did not thank him.” God wants us to thank Him.
I hope that you want to please God. You can please Him by telling Him that You are thankful for all His wonderful blessings. —NW

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, it is an honor to be able to thank You for my blessings. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

—NW

Bible Reading: Luke 17:11-19
Tuesday, November 25, 2014

Giving Thanks (4) Our next question about giving thanks is: Who should give thanks? Praising God and giving thanks are two very important things for Christians to do. Many times in the Bible, Christians are commanded to give thanks and praise God. Psalm 107:1-2a says, “Praise the Lord because he is good! His faithful love will last forever! Everyone the Lord has saved should repeat that word of thanks.”
Our Bible Reading today tells us that Jesus healed ten men with leprosy, a terrible skin disease. These ten men asked Jesus to heal them, and Jesus healed all of them. But only one man thanked Jesus. Jesus must have been sad that the other nine men did not thank Him.
What about you? Maybe you are like the nine men. Maybe you enjoy life and accept things from God but do not thank God for these blessings. I hope you are like the one man who thanked Jesus.
Be like the man who thanked Jesus. Thank God and praise Him today and every day! —NW

Giving Thanks (3)
Bible Reading: Psalm 116:1-2
Monday, November 24, 2014

Giving Thanks (3) We know that we should be thankful. But for what things should we give thanks? Today we will look at several Bible verses. These verses give us examples of things for which we should be thankful.
In 2 Corinthians 9:15 Paul said, “Thanks be to God for his gift that is too wonderful to describe.” What is this gift? In verse 14 Paul talked about God’s grace. We should be thankful for God’s grace, given through Jesus.
Our Bible verses say, “I love the Lord for hearing me, for listening to my prayers. Yes, he paid attention to me, so I will always call to him whenever I need help.” Be thankful that God pays attention to your prayers and answers them. James 1:17a reminds us, “Everything good comes from God. Every perfect gift is from him.” Give thanks to God for all your blessings — family, good health, food, clothes and a place to live.
We have many, many things for which we can be thankful. Take time to thank God today! —NW

—NW

Giving Thanks (2)
Bible Reading: Psalm 92:1-5
Sunday, November 23, 2014

Giving Thanks (2) Yesterday we started talking about giving thanks to God. Our question today is: When should we give thanks to God?
The Bible clearly answers that question in Ephesians 5:20. This verse says, “Always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” It is easy to think about giving thanks at only one time of the year. But God does not give us His blessings only one day a year. He blesses us every day! Often, though, we fail to give thanks to God.
The Bible gives us many examples of when to give thanks. Verse 2 of our Bible Reading tells us we can give thanks in the morning and at night. In John 6:11, we read that Jesus thanked God for food. We can thank God for food every time we eat. In Philippians 4:6, Paul reminds us to give thanks when we pray.
I hope that you are thankful and that you will take time today to thank God for His many blessings. —NW

Giving Thanks (1)
Bible Reading: Psalm 69:30-36
Saturday, November 22, 2014

Giving Thanks (1) It is very important for us to give thanks to God. Our Bible Reading today is one of the many times in the Bible that we are encouraged to thank God for all He has done for us.
When we pray, our prayers should be full of thanks. Then our thanks should lead us to praise God. Verse 34 of our Bible Reading says, “Praise him, heaven and earth! Sea and everything in it, praise him!”
I know some Christians who grumble and complain to God. This shows that they are not thankful for what God has done for them. In the Old Testament we read that the Israelites often complained to God. Then God allowed bad things to happen to them. Later, the Israelites realized that they should always give thanks to God.
Soon it will be Thanksgiving Day in America. Do you give thanks to God every day? For the next few days we will look at some questions about giving thanks. Begin today to show your thanks to God. —NW

—GT

Joy
Bible Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16
Friday, November 21, 2014

Joy Today’s Bible verse has only five words: “Always be full of joy.” Can we really be filled with joy all the time? Can we really obey this Bible verse?
Yes, we can be filled with joy all the time. God promised that anyone who believes in Jesus and obeys Him will be filled with joy. This kind of joy is not a happy giggly feeling. This kind of joy makes you feel content and safe and at peace in your heart. Joy is knowing that no matter what happens, God is in control. Real joy is trusting God to take care of you, no matter what happens.
How can we have this joy? Follow and obey God. Serve other people. Worship God. Put other people first. Read and study the Bible. Pray.
If you do these things today, you can say with the psalm writer, “Yes, we will be happy because the Lord did a great thing for us” (Psalm 126:3). —GT
