Psalm 119 (19)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:145-152
Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Verse 147 of our Bible Reading says, “I get up early in the morning to pray to you.” When my sons were young, I tried to have a time of prayer and Bible reading early every morning. Often it was a struggle to get my sons ready for school. So finally I decided to set my alarm every morning and get up to pray. During my prayer time, I prayed for my sons and their day at school.
One morning I had my prayer time and sent my sons off to school. It was winter and the old furnace was on in the school. Something went wrong with the furnace, and smoke started pouring into the hallways of the school. The children were all safely evacuated from the building. Later I learned that the situation could have been much worse. I believe that God answered my prayer and kept my sons safe.
After that experience, I truly believed that my morning prayer time was very important. Have you talked to God today? —BH

“The next morning Jesus woke up very early. He left the house while it was still dark and went to a place where he could be alone and pray.” Mark 1:35
PRAYER: Lord, I trust You and ask You to bless me today. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—BH

Psalm 119 (15)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:113-120
Tuesday, November 29, 2016

In verse 114a of Psalm 119, the writer says to God, “Hide me and protect me.” When I am surrounded by problems in my life, I want God to hide and protect me, too.
I have found a way so that I can feel like God is hiding me and protecting me. I have a corner of my living room set up just for my Bible study and prayer time. When I sit there, I read my Bible or books written by Christian authors. Or I spend time praying and praising God.
This time in my special corner helps me prepare for my day. It gives me peace so I can go out in the world and face conflicts and problems. I look forward to this time every day when I can be quiet and renew my spirit.
Maybe you can have a special place where you can be alone with God. Ask Him to hide you and protect you and fill you with His Word. —BH

“Support me, Lord, as you promised, and I will live. I trust in you, so don't disappoint me.” Psalm 119:116

—BH

Psalm 119 (14)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:105-112
Sunday, November 27, 2016

Verse 108a of our Bible Reading says, “Lord, accept the praise I want to give you.” This section of Psalm 119 lists many reasons for praising God.
Several years ago my husband died. It was a hard struggle for me to raise my sons. I suffered emotionally, and I also had many physical problems. Every day I would pray and ask God to help me with my problems. Then one day as I was praying, I stopped. I realized that I needed to praise God, too.
I had been so busy thinking about my problems that I had forgotten about the many things I could praise God for — my sons, Christians who encouraged me, people who prayed for me and most of all, God who took care of me every day!
As I started to spend more time praising God, I realized that my problems and pain were not as bad as before. Praising God encouraged and strengthened me! Take time to praise God today! —BH

“I praise the Lord because he is good. I praise the name of the Lord Most High.” Psalm 7:17

Psalm 119 (13)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:97-104
Saturday, November 19, 2016

The New Testament teaches us that we should never stop praying to God (1 Thessalonians 5:17). We can pray to God anywhere at any time. But I wonder if we are constantly studying God's Word.
In verses 97-98a of our Bible Reading for today, the writer says, “Oh, how I love your teachings! I talk about them all the time. Your commands are always with me.” These verses indicate that we should be reading and studying the Bible all the time.
Do you love to read God's Word? Some people do not like to read the Bible because it shows them the wrong things they do. And some people do not want to follow God and live differently than the world.
The Bible is our help and our guide. God wants us to follow His teachings every day, not just part of the time. When we study God's Word, we can remember Bible verses and keep them with us constantly. —BH

—BH

Psalm 119 (12)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:89-96
Wednesday, November 16, 2016

When I was a teenager, some people teased me and tried to take advantage of me. I had some friends who were also teased by others. I liked to go to a movie or sit in the park with these friends. Sometimes we would just get together and pray. We asked God to help us stand strong against the people who mistreated us.
One day I decided that I would not accept the teasing any more. I committed myself to reading my Bible and praying every morning before I went to school. Often I would just pick a place to read in my Bible. No matter where I read, God's words encouraged me and gave me strength to stand strong. Verse 95 of our Bible Reading is a verse that encouraged me. “The wicked tried to destroy me, but your rules made me wise.”
God's Word, the Bible, will help you face difficult times in your life. Read God’s words of encouragement and hope today! —BH

—ECW

Love Your Enemies
Bible Reading: Matthew 5:43-48
Monday, November 14, 2016

In 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley, Jr. Several years later, President Reagan said that he had forgiven Mr. Hinckley and wanted to meet with him in person to tell him about his forgiveness. I think that is a good example of what Jesus talked about in our Bible Reading today. In verses 43 and 44 Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies. Pray for those who treat you badly.” Jesus went on to add, “...if you are nice only to your friends, you are no better than anyone else. Even the people who don't know God are nice to their friends” (verse 47).
Sometimes it is very hard to forgive our enemies and show them kindness. But that is what God wants us to do. Think about someone today who needs to receive your love and forgiveness. Ask God to help you show kindness to that person. —ECW

“But I say to you people who are listening to me, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you...Pray for the people who are mean to you.” Luke 6:27-28

Compassion
Bible Reading: Mark 8:1-10
Friday, October 28, 2016

Today our Bible verses tell us about a time when Jesus miraculously fed 4000 people. Jesus did that because He had compassion for them.
But Jesus did not only feel sorry for the people. His compassion led Him to find a way to feed the large group of people. First, Jesus had his disciples help Him. They gathered the food they had and then gave the food to the people. Jesus’ action was giving thanks for the food and then multiplying it.
We can see Christians around us today showing compassion to people in need. A young mother is a friend to an elderly widow who lives next door. A teen works at a shelter and helps feed homeless people. A preacher counsels others who are facing crises in their lives.
Just as Jesus showed compassion to the hungry people, we can see God working through Christians today. Ask God to show you ways to share His compassion with people today. —SH*

“Jesus saw the many people and felt sorry for them because they were worried and helpless — like sheep without a shepherd to lead them.” Matthew 9:36

—BH

Bible Reading: Psalm 119:65-72
Thursday, October 27, 2016

When I was in college, I took a math class. Sometimes when I tried to solve a math problem, I felt like my head would explode. I thought that those math problems were the worst things I would ever experience.
But during the past few years, I have experienced many bad things. Since my husband died, I have had the responsibility of taking care of my sons and dealing with my own health problems. I have to make important decisions all the time.
In our Bible Reading today, we learn how we should handle important decisions. The first thing we should do is ask God for His help and wisdom — “Give me the knowledge to make wise decisions” (verse 66a). Then we need to make sure we are obeying God's Word — “But now I carefully obey everything you say” (verse 67b). Finally, we need to ask God to guide us — “Teach me your laws” (verse 68b).
Do you have important decisions to make today? Talk to God about these decisions and ask Him to give you wisdom and strength. —BH

Bible Reading: Psalm 119:57-64
Monday, October 24, 2016

Verse 62a of our Bible Reading reminds me of an experience I had a long time ago. This verse says, “In the middle of the night, I get up to thank you.” When my son was a baby, I thought he had a cold. During the night he became very sick. I called our doctor, and he told me to take my son to the hospital right away. I drove my son to the hospital and watched as doctors and nurses took care of him. I felt helpless. All I could do was stand out of the way and pray.
Finally I was allowed to take my son home. The doctor had given me special instructions on how to take care of my son. I slept beside my son for several nights. I was very tired and kept trying not to cry. Slowly my son improved. One night I woke up and noticed that my son looked a lot better. I got up and prayed and thanked God for helping my son through this sickness.
When you face bad times in your life, ask God to help and comfort you. And don’t forget to thank Him for answering your prayer. —BH

Bible Reading: Psalm 119:41-48
Monday, October 10, 2016

One summer my oldest son was at military boot camp. My younger son was ready to start high school.
On a Saturday that summer, I looked out the window and saw my younger son walk very slowly to the house. He had been bike riding and had an accident. I drove him to the emergency room, and we found out that he had three breaks in his elbow. Then a couple of days later, my older son called to tell me that he was in the military hospital. He had fainted and his blood pressure was very low.
I prayed for my sons like the writer of our verses prayed — “Lord, show me your faithful love” (verse 41). And God did take care of them. A military chaplain helped my older son through his hospital stay. And some friends helped entertain my younger son while his arm was healing.
Turn to God and He will show you His faithful love! —BH
