Proverbs (4)
Bible Reading: Proverbs 3:1-8
Saturday, November 5, 2016

When we read and study the Bible, we should keep God's words and commands in our hearts. Then when we are tempted to do wrong, we can use God's words to help us stand strong and resist temptation.
In our Bible Reading for today, Solomon tells his son to remember what he has taught him. “What I teach will give you a good, long life, and all will go well for you” (verse 2). In the same way, we should always remember what we have learned from the Bible.
Verses 5 and 6 are very important for us to learn and remember. “Trust the Lord completely, and don't depend on your own knowledge. With every step you take, think about what he wants, and he will help you go the right way.” When we are tempted or we face difficult situations, we are not alone. We can trust and depend on God! God’s words and commands will guide you today and show you what is right. —BR

“Don't trust in your own wisdom, but fear and respect the Lord and stay away from evil.” Proverbs 3:7
PRAYER: Father, thank You for Your words and commands. I want to always remember them. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Old Testament (6)
Bible Reading: Exodus 20:1-17
Friday, September 30, 2016

God gave His people, the Israelites, many rules to help them live good lives. Some of these rules are listed in our Bible Reading today. Often we call these rules “The Ten Commandments.”
Some people think that Christians should not pay attention to the Ten Commandments because they are in the Old Testament. But Jesus talked about these commandments a lot. In Matthew, chapter 5, Jesus said that wanting to break these commands in our heart is the same as doing the wrong thing.
In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus tells us the two most important commands we must obey. “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.’
If we obey these two commands, we will have a good relationship with God and get along with other people. —RF*

“But I will be very kind to those who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of generations.” Exodus 20:6
PRAYER: Father, thank You for showing me how I can please You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Weather (1)
Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 11:13-25
Sunday, July 31, 2016

There are many Bible verses that talk about weather. All of these verses show us that God is in control of our weather. Today and for the next nine days, we will look at Bible verses about weather.
God promised that He would take care of the Israelites. But God expected the Israelites to obey His commands. In verse 13 God said, “You must listen carefully to the commands I give you today: You must love the Lord your God, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul.” Then God told the Israelites that if they would do that, He would send rain for their land at the right time (verse 14a).
The Israelites needed rain so they could grow food for themselves and their animals. God said that if they would obey His commands, He would provide them with rain. God expects us to obey Him, too. When we do, God will provide for us and bless us. Do you have a right relationship with God? Are you obeying His commands today? —JK

“Be careful to obey every command I have told you to follow: Love the Lord your God, follow all his ways, and be faithful to him.” Deuteronomy 11:22
PRAYER: God, thank You for sending rain to water the earth. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Traditions
Bible Reading: Matthew 15:1-9
Friday, December 4, 2015

Traditions Often Christian families have celebrations together. Families may worship God together, or they may have traditions they follow at home. If their parents did something year after year, they probably keep those traditions in their own family. They might not even know why they are keeping those traditions.
We know that Jesus' earthly family followed traditions. “Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover festival” (Luke 2:41). Jesus also followed the tradition of worshiping with other people. “Jesus traveled to Nazareth...On the Sabbath day he went to the synagogue as he always did” (Luke 4:16a).
These traditions are good and helpful. But our Bible Reading today reminds us that we should not replace God's commands with man-made traditions. “So you are teaching that it is not important to do what God said. You think it is more important to follow those traditions you have” (verse 6b).
Be sure that you are following God's commands today. —PD
“These people honor me with their words, but I am not really important to them.” Matthew 15:8
PRAYER: Father, help me to follow You and obey Your Word. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—MK

Love Serves Others
Bible Reading: Galatians 5:13-18
Tuesday, October 20, 2015

Love Serves Others Jesus said, “Do for others what you would want them to do for you” (Matthew 7:12a). Jesus also said that the most important command is to “love the Lord your God,” and the second most important command is to “love your neighbor the same as you love yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39).
Jesus showed us the way to obey these commands. Jesus showed love for God by always obeying God’s Word, by communicating with God through prayer and by resisting temptations to sin. Jesus also showed His love for God by loving other people.
Jesus showed His love for other people by serving them. When people were hungry, Jesus fed them. When people were sick, Jesus healed them. Jesus also shared the Word of God with people who needed to hear it. Finally, Jesus took the punishment for people’s sins when He died on the cross.
Look at the ways Jesus showed His love. Then think about how you can copy His example today. —MK

Command to Love
Bible Reading: Matthew 22:36-40
Tuesday, October 13, 2015

Command to Love Many times in the Bible, God commands us to love Him and also to love other people. One time people asked Jesus what the greatest commands were. Jesus answered by quoting verses from the Old Testament.
In our Bible Reading today, Jesus said that the greatest commands are for us to love God and to love other people. Jesus said in verse 40 that ALL the laws in the Bible come from these two commands. Romans 13:8-10 tells us that if we truly want to obey God, we must love others.
In the book of John, Jesus commanded His followers to love each other. He said that we must do this so we can follow Him. Jesus also said that people will know we follow Jesus by the way we love God and others (John 13:35).
Chapters 3 and 4 of 1 John explain that if we want to follow Jesus, we must love God and others. If we truly belong to Jesus, we will obey His command to love. —MK

-JK

Plans for 2015 (1)
Bible Reading: Exodus 20:3-17
Thursday, January 1, 2015

Plans for 2015 (1) On New Year's Day, many people make plans for the coming year. Right now I am thinking about what I can do for God during 2015. Today and for the next two days we will read some wise words from Moses, Paul and Peter. These verses will help us learn what we can do for God this year.
Our Bible verses today are what we usually call the “Ten Commandments.” God told Moses these commands, and then Moses shared them with the Israelites. Even though these commands are from the Old Testament, they are still important for Christians today.
When you read these commands, you will notice that the first four talk about our relationship with God, and the last six talk about our relationship with other people. If we follow these commands during 2015, we will be closer to God and have better relationships with our family and friends.
What will you do for God in 2015? —JK

—JK

Walking (4) In today's Bible Reading, verse 19 says, “Teach these laws to your children. Talk about these things when you sit in your houses, when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.” Moses received these words from God. It has always been God's plan for fathers and mothers to teach their children about Him. In these verses, God reminds parents to take every opportunity to teach their children about His love and His commands.
When I was a child, my family drove 16 miles to church. My parents used that time in the car to teach me about God. We sang Christian songs and memorized Bible verses. We played Bible trivia games and talked about God's creation.
Remember these words from Deuteronomy and find ways to teach your children and grandchildren about God. No matter what you are doing — sitting at the dinner table, walking in the park or tucking your children into bed at night — you should be sharing God's love and teachings with them. —JK

Traveling with Paul (1)
Bible Reading: Matthew 28:16-20
Monday, September 1, 2014

Traveling with Paul (1) In the last issue of Daily Devotions for the Deaf, we talked about the start of God’s church and how it grew. In this devotion book we will focus on the spread of Christianity throughout the world. This growth happened because Paul and other Christians shared the Good News about Jesus. Paul also wrote letters to churches to encourage them and help them be strong Christians.
When Paul went on a missionary journey, he took other Christians with him. For the next seven days, we will look at some of the people who traveled with Paul to help him spread the Gospel.
When Paul told people about Jesus, he was obeying the command that Jesus gave His followers in our Bible Reading today. “So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything that I have told you to do” (Matthew 28:19-20a).

God's Commands
Bible Reading: Exodus 20:1-17
Monday, August 4, 2014

God's Commands In our Bible Reading today, we find some commands that God gave to His people, the Israelites. These commands are sometimes called the “Ten Commandments.” God gave His people many more commands, but these commands give practical advice for everyday living.
Some Christians wonder why they should pay attention to these commands that were given to the Israelites. We should obey these commands because they will help us to be closer to God and to have good relationships with other people.
In the New Testament, Jesus mentioned these commands. When the devil tempted Jesus three times (Matthew 4:10), He answered the devil by saying, “You must worship the Lord your God. Serve only him!”
Study, learn and obey God’s commands. God will bless you as you serve Him. —MH*
