Jesus' Life (4)
Bible Reading: Matthew 4:1-11
Sunday, October 16, 2016

If you walk around a shopping mall, you may see ads for different products sold in the mall. We may ignore some ads, but others might catch our eye. These ads may tempt us to buy things we can't afford or we don't need.
In our Bible verses today, the devil tempted Jesus. The devil wanted Jesus to fail and disobey God. But Jesus was able to resist all the temptations presented by the devil. Each time Jesus was tempted, He said, “No!”
How was Jesus able to do this? He relied on God's Word to help Him. Each time Jesus was tempted, He quoted verses from the Bible. Jesus set a good example for us. We, too, can resist temptations by using God's Word.
Maybe the devil will tempt you to sin today. When that happens, pray to God and read God's words in the Bible. Then thank God for His help and His strength! —MP*

“For this reason, Jesus had to be made like us, his brothers and sisters, in every way...And now he can help those who are tempted. He is able to help because he himself suffered and was tempted.” Hebrews 2:17-18
PRAYER: Father, forgive our sins and help us to resist the devil. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Seven Churches (4)
Bible Reading: Revelation 2:8-11
Monday, April 4, 2016

In our Bible verses today, John shares Jesus' message with the Christians in Smyrna. The city of Smyrna was an important seaport 35 miles north of Ephesus. Many Jews lived in Smyrna. Also there were many people who worshiped Roman gods as well as the Emperor Tiberius. These people caused problems for the Christians in Smyrna.
Verse 10a reminds us that it is the devil who really persecutes Christians. “Don't be afraid of what will happen to you. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison.” The devil wants Christians to stop following God and follow him instead. But God uses these times of persecution to help us grow stronger.
When we face troubles or times of persecution, we can still be victorious through Jesus. God will bless us, and our final reward will be eternal life with Him. I encourage you to stay faithful to Him today and every day! —DF

“...be faithful, even if you have to die. If you continue to be faithful, I will give you the reward of life.” Revelation 2:10b
PRAYER: God, no matter what I face today, I want to remain faithful to You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Know the Enemy
Bible Reading: Ephesians 6:10-13
Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Know the Enemy Military leaders try to learn all they can about the enemy they face in war. They try to discover the enemy’s weaknesses and strengths.
As Christians, we need to know our enemy. Sometimes we think that people who hurt us are our enemies. But our real enemy is the devil. In John 8:44, Jesus told some Jews, “Your father is the devil. You belong to him. You want to do what he wants. He was a murderer from the beginning. He was always against the truth. There is no truth in him. He is like the lies he tells. Yes, the devil is a liar. He is the father of lies.”
In our Bible Reading today, Paul reminded the Ephesian Christians that their fight was “not against people on earth” (verse 12a). He told them they were “fighting against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenly places” (verse 12b).
Be careful and watch out for the devil. He is your enemy, and he is strong. Depend on God to help you withstand the devil’s attacks. Stand strong for God and what is right. —PD
“Control yourselves and be careful! The devil is your enemy, and he goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to attack and eat.” 1 Peter 5:8
PRAYER: God, thank You for helping me fight against the devil. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

God's Armor (7)
Bible Reading: Ephesians 6:10-17
Friday, August 22, 2014

God’s Armor (7) Today we will talk about the last piece of God’s armor that Paul mentions — the sword of the Spirit.
Today most soldiers use guns to fight the enemy. But in Bible times, soldiers used swords. Just as a soldier needed a sword to defend himself, Christians need the sword of the Spirit as their weapon. But what is the sword of the Spirit? Verse 17b of our Bible Reading says “that sword is the teaching of God.” Where do we find God's teaching? In the Bible!
In Matthew, chapter 4, we read that the devil tempted Jesus to sin. The devil tempted Jesus three times. Each time Jesus answered him with a command from God's Word. Jesus did not sin. He used the Bible to defeat the devil.
God's Word is our weapon against the devil. Study and learn from the Bible. Then you will be prepared to face the devil and defeat him! —CE
“Your word is like a lamp that guides my steps, a light that shows the path I should take.” Psalm 119:105
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I need Your Word to help me be strong and fight against the devil. Help me to read it every day. In Jesus’ name.

God’s Armor (6)
Bible Reading: Ephesians 6:10-17
Thursday, August 21, 2014

God’s Armor (6) Long ago, soldiers wore helmets to protect their heads from being injured. Today, soldiers still wear helmets. Even motorcyclists and bicyclists wear helmets to protect themselves.
In our verses today, Paul says that Christians should accept “God’s salvation” as their helmet (verse 17a). A helmet protects a person’s head and brain. In the same way, salvation through Jesus protects our thoughts and keeps us focused on God and His Word.
The devil wants to tempt us to think bad thoughts and doubt God and His plan of salvation. But if we remember that Jesus loves us and died for us, we will stay close to God.
Maybe today the devil will tempt you to doubt that God really loves you and wants you to be His child. Keep remembering that Jesus died for your sins and gave you a way to receive eternal life. —CE

Bible Reading: Ephesians 6:10-17
Saturday, August 16, 2014

God’s Armor (1) In our Bible verses today, Paul reminds the Christians in Ephesus to “be strong in the Lord and in his great power” (verse 10b). Then Paul goes on to tell how a person can do this.
Through the next few verses, Paul talks about God's armor. Paul mentions different parts of armor that soldiers used to wear into battle. Then he compares these parts to ways God helps us so we can “fight against the devil’s clever tricks” (verse 11b).
The devil is very smart, and he is sneaky. He tries every day to get us to disobey God. He wants us to follow him instead of God. But God wants us to wear His armor and stand strong against the devil.
For the next few days we will look at the different things God gives us as protection against the devil. As you learn about God's armor, be sure to thank Him for His love and protection every day. —JK

Women in Acts (9)
Bible Reading: Acts 16:16-24
Wednesday, July 9, 2014

Women in Acts (9) One day Paul and his friends met a servant girl. This girl had a spirit from the devil that gave her power to tell what would happen in the future. Some men owned this girl and made lots of money when she told about the future.
The servant girl started following Paul and his friends. Verse 17b tells us, “She kept shouting, ‘These men are servants of the Most High God! They are telling you how you can be saved!’” Paul commanded the evil spirit to come out of the girl. The men who owned the girl were upset because they couldn’t use the girl to make money any more. So, they had Paul and Silas beaten and thrown into jail.
We don’t know what happened to the servant girl after this. I am sure she must have been happy to be free from the evil spirit. I hope that she learned about Jesus and became a Christian.
There are many people in the world today who are following the devil. Those people need to know about Jesus and His free gift of salvation. Tell someone about Jesus today. —JK

God’s Power
Bible Reading: Acts 8:9-11,18-25
Sunday, May 11, 2014

God’s Power God warned His people, the Israelites, not to have anything to do with things from the devil. Deuteronomy 18:10b-11 says, “Don’t try to learn what will happen in the future by talking to a fortune teller or by going to a magician, a witch, or a sorcerer... Don’t let any of your people become a medium or a wizard.”
Our Bible Reading tells us about a man named Simon who was “doing magic and amazing all the people of Samaria” (verse 9b). He saw that Peter and John laid hands on Christians and gave them special powers through the Holy Spirit. Simon wanted to have this power, too, so he offered money to Peter and John. But Peter rebuked Simon and told him that he couldn’t “buy God’s gift with money” (verse 20b).
Simon did not understand God’s power. He thought that he could buy it. Simon did not realize that God freely gives His power and love to those who believe and follow Jesus.
God offers you His free gift of salvation and eternal life. Have you accepted His gift? —SH*

-JK

Be Careful
Bible Reading: 1 Peter 5:8-9
Friday, February 28, 2014

Be Careful The other day I made myself a sandwich. I ate a few bites of the sandwich and then the phone rang. The call was for my husband, so I went outside to get him. When I came back to the table, the top of my sandwich was gone!
What happened to my sandwich? Our one-year-old puppy was in her kennel, and I did not know that the door of her kennel was open. While I was gone, she came out and ate my sandwich. I learned that I always need to be careful and make sure that her kennel is shut.
Our Bible verses today remind us that we need to be careful. Why? Because the devil is always looking for ways to tempt us to sin. If we are not paying attention to God’s Word, we may not realize that the devil is tempting us. Then we will disobey God.
Peter says we should “refuse to follow the devil. Stand strong in your faith” (verse 9a). I hope you will be careful today. Pay attention to Peter’s words when you are tempted to sin. —JK

—JA*

Roaring Lion
Bible Reading: 1 Peter 5:6-11
Friday, November 8, 2013

Roaring Lion Most people are very careful around lions. Why? Because lions can attack and kill people. In our Bible Reading today, Peter talks about a roaring lion. But this lion is not the kind you can see in a zoo.
The roaring lion that Peter is talking about is the devil. Verse 8b says, “The devil is your enemy, and he goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to attack and eat.” The devil is always around us, tempting us to sin. He wants us to be separated from God forever.
In Ephesians 6:12b, Paul reminds us that our struggles here on earth are not against other people. “We are fighting against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenly places.” Verses 8 and 9 of our Bible Reading tell us how we can resist the devil. We need to control ourselves, be careful, refuse to follow the devil, and stand strong in our faith.
Watch out for the devil today. Let God help you stand strong and obey His Word. —JA*
