Compassion
Bible Reading: Mark 8:1-10
Friday, October 28, 2016

Today our Bible verses tell us about a time when Jesus miraculously fed 4000 people. Jesus did that because He had compassion for them.
But Jesus did not only feel sorry for the people. His compassion led Him to find a way to feed the large group of people. First, Jesus had his disciples help Him. They gathered the food they had and then gave the food to the people. Jesus’ action was giving thanks for the food and then multiplying it.
We can see Christians around us today showing compassion to people in need. A young mother is a friend to an elderly widow who lives next door. A teen works at a shelter and helps feed homeless people. A preacher counsels others who are facing crises in their lives.
Just as Jesus showed compassion to the hungry people, we can see God working through Christians today. Ask God to show you ways to share His compassion with people today. —SH*

“Jesus saw the many people and felt sorry for them because they were worried and helpless — like sheep without a shepherd to lead them.” Matthew 9:36
PRAYER: Dear Father, help me show compassion to others. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Mercy and Grace
Bible Reading: Ephesians 2:1-10
Wednesday, July 13, 2016

I read a story about a girl who had a rare kidney disease. The doctors said that she needed a kidney transplant, so a family member gave one of their kidneys to the girl. Several years later, the girl needed another transplant. This time another relative gave a kidney to save the girl's life. Without these transplants, the girl would have died.
That story made me think about our Bible Reading for today. Verse 5 tells us that we “were spiritually dead because of all we had done against him.” But through God's mercy and grace, He sent Jesus to die for us. And God gives us a new life and the promise of eternal life with Him. “In Christ Jesus, God made us new people so that we would spend our lives doing the good things he had already planned for us to do”(verse 10).
Every day we need to thank God for what He has done for us. Without His mercy and grace, we would be lost and separated forever from Him. —BH

“I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God.” Ephesians 2:8
PRAYER: Dear God, thank You for showing me Your mercy and grace through Jesus. In His name. Amen.

—Jk

Little Things
Bible Reading: Colossians 3:12-17
Saturday, July 2, 2016

One day a co-worker and I took a small basket of goodies to a family who lives next door to the Deaf Missions building. We wanted to thank them for all they do for us. A faithful devotion book reader calls me every few weeks just to tell me that he appreciated a devotion that I wrote. The women in my Sunday school class prepare meals for people who are sick or who have just come home from the hospital.
What do all these things have in common? They are all little things that do not require much time or work. But they are all ways that we can show our love for other Christians.
In our Bible Reading today, Paul reminds us of ways we can show love to other Christians — show mercy, be kind, be humble, be gentle and patient, don't be angry, forgive others and love each other. All of these things are easy to do, but sometimes we get busy and forget to show our love for each other.
Do something special today to show your love for a brother or sister in Christ. —JK

Loving Others
Bible Reading: Jude 1:17-23
Sunday, May 29, 2016

The Bible tells us many times that we should love other people. God expects us to love all people. But God also expects us to avoid sin. This was confusing to me until I read the verses in our Bible Reading for today.
Verses 22-23 say, “Help those who have doubts. Rescue those who are living in danger of hell's fire. There are others you should treat with mercy, but be very careful that their filthy lives don't rub off on you.” This is wise advice for Christians. We should love other people by being involved in their lives and by helping them. But we should show our love for God by not allowing these people's sins to influence us to do wrong.
We need to be very wise and careful when we interact with people who are not Christians. Love them and help them learn about God. But we should not give into their lifestyle and sin. —JP*

“We know what it means to fear the Lord, so we try to help people accept the truth. God knows what we really are, and I hope that in your hearts you know us too.” 2 Corinthians 5:11

Anger
Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 29:24-28
Friday, March 4, 2016

Did you know that God can become angry? The Bible tells about many times when God became angry. In our Bible Reading today, God became angry with the Israelites because they were worshiping other gods. Verse 28 says, “The Lord became very angry and upset with them. So he took them out of their land. He put them in another land, where they are today.”
God was angry. Does that mean He sinned? No! But many people believe that anger is a sin. That isn't true. Anger is an emotion, like love. It is not wrong to be angry. But anger can lead us to do sinful things. Anger becomes sin when we say or do wrong things because we are angry.

We all become angry at times. But we should not let our anger cause us to sin. Ask God to help you behave in the right way when you become angry. Ask Him to help you show love and mercy to others. —GT

“When you are angry, don't let that anger make you sin, and don't stay angry all day. Don't give the devil a way to defeat you.” Ephesians 4:26-27
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me show love, not anger, to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Jesus Cares
Bible Reading: Mark 6:30-44
Thursday, February 4, 2016

Frank E. Graeff lived in the early 1900s. He was known as the “sunshine minister” because he was so kind to everyone. He wrote many hymns and a book.
In one hymn, Mr. Graeff wrote these words, “Oh, yes He cares. I know He cares. His heart is touched with my grief...I know my Savior cares.” These words remind us that Jesus truly cares about us.

Our Bible Reading tells us that Jesus and His followers were very busy and needed to rest. So Jesus got into a boat and led his followers to a quiet place. But many people still followed Jesus. When he got out of the boat, there was a crowd of people waiting for Him.
Did Jesus get mad and send the people away? No! “He felt sorry for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd to care for them” (verse 34b). Jesus cared so much for these people that later He fed them.

It is wonderful to know that Jesus loves us and cares for us. He will take care of you today! —BH

—CPE*

Merciful
Bible Reading: Ephesians 2:4-7
Tuesday, January 26, 2016

In our Bible Reading for today, Paul talks about God's great mercy. Even though we are dead in our sins and far from perfect, God still loves us. That is mercy!
God showed His great mercy to us when He sent His Son, Jesus, to come into this world and die on the cross for our sins. 1 John 4:10 says, “True love is God's love for us, not our love for God. He sent his Son as the way to take away our sins.” God could have let us die as punishment for our sins. He could have decided not to save us. But God chose to be merciful. He chose to save us even though we do not deserve it!

God also shows His mercy to us everyday when we ask Him for forgiveness of our sins. Hebrews 4:16 says, “With Jesus as our high priest, we can feel free to come before God's throne where there is grace. There we receive mercy and kindness to help us when we need it.” Praise God that we, as Christians, can experience His mercy every day!
How wonderful is His mercy! —CPE*

“But God is rich in mercy, and he loved us very much.” Ephesians 2:4
PRAYER: Dear God, even though I don't deserve it, thank You for showing me mercy. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Praise God
Bible Reading: Psalm 86:1-17
Friday, June 19, 2015

Praise God In our Bible Reading today, we learn about God's character. He is a loving God, and we need to praise and worship Him. We know God is loving because He sent His only Son, Jesus, to die for us.
Verse 10 says, “You are great and do amazing things. You and you alone are God.” God is awesome, and He is truly the only God. I am comforted when I remember that God is eternal — He always has been and will continue forever.
Verses 11 and 12 tell us that we need to worship and praise God. Praising God should be something that we do all day, not just when we pray or when we go to church. Finally, verse 15 tells us that God is merciful. Through His mercy, God offers us His forgiveness and gift of eternal life.
Take time today to stop and praise God. He has saved us, and we should thank Him for that. —SV
“My Lord, you are a kind and merciful God. You are patient, loyal, and full of love. Show that you hear me and be kind to me. I am your servant, so give me strength.” Psalm 86:15-16a
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me to praise You more. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—JF

Lost (3)
Bible Reading: Luke 15: 11-24
Monday, February 23, 2015

Lost (3) The third story that Jesus told is my favorite. This story is about a son who took his family money and went away. Then this son wasted all his money “living like a fool” (verse 13b). When all his money was gone, the only job he could find was feeding pigs. This son was so hungry that he wanted to eat the pigs’ food!
Finally the son decided to go home to his father and ask for forgiveness. “While the son was still a long way off, his father saw him coming and felt sorry for him. So he ran to him and hugged and kissed him” (verse 20). The son did not deserve his father’s forgiveness, but the father accepted him back as his son.
We have all sinned and disobeyed God. We don’t deserve God’s forgiveness. But God still offers us His love and mercy. No matter how bad you think your sins are, God can forgive you and make you part of His family.
Turn to God today — He loves you and will forgive all your sins. —JF

“All have sinned and are not good enough to share God’s divine greatness.” Romans 3:23

-CPE*

Favorite Verses (1)
Bible Reading: Romans 12:1-2
Friday, February 6, 2015

Favorite Verses (1) Today and the next few days, I will share with you some of my favorite Bible verses. I will also share what I have learned from these verses and how I apply them to my own life as I follow Jesus.
When I read Romans 12:1-2, I am reminded of God’s great mercy. He sent Jesus to die on a cross so that my sins can be forgiven. Because of God’s mercy and sacrifice for me, I am encouraged to be a living sacrifice for Him. Because of what He has done, I am led to worship Him in every area of my life.
These verses also challenge me to not be like people of this world. Instead, I am learning to let God change me inside. I want to accept what God wants for me and my life. And when I follow Him, I will be able to know what is good and pleasing to Him. His plans are always perfect.
Apply these verses to your life. Give your life fully to God. Follow Him. Trust God and His plans for you. —CPE*
