Weather (10)
Bible Reading: Exodus 19:16-20
Tuesday, August 9, 2016

I did not sleep well last night. We had a bad thunderstorm, and there was lots of thunder. Even if you are deaf and have never heard thunder, you have probably felt the vibrations that thunder produces.
Thunder has always been a symbol of great power. Our Bible verses today tell us about the time when Moses met God on Mount Sinai. It was at this time that God gave Moses His commands for the Israelites. “On the morning of the third day, a thick cloud came down onto the mountain. There was thunder and lightning and a very loud sound from a trumpet” (verse 16). Then verse 19b says, “Every time Moses spoke to God, God answered him with a voice like thunder.”
God is very loving and kind. But He is also great and powerful. We can read about His great power in the Bible. And we can see God's power today through creation. Take time today to look at the world. Think about God's power and thank Him for His goodness. —JK

“Each new day tells more of the story, and each night reveals more and more about God's power.” Psalm 19:2
PRAYER: Father, thank You for showing me Your love and power. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Seven Churches (3)
Bible Reading: Revelation 2:1-7
Sunday, April 3, 2016

The first message is to the church in the city of Ephesus. This city had a busy harbor. Many people traveled to Ephesus to worship the Roman goddess Diana. The main business of the city was making idols of Diana.
Jesus tells this church “I know what you do, how hard you work and never give up. I know that you don't accept evil people” (verse 2a). But then He gives them a warning. “But I have this against you: You have left the love you had in the beginning”(verse 4).
When we first become Christians, we are excited to share the Good News about Jesus. We can't wait to tell our friends and family about Him. But when we face troubles, we sometimes lose some of our excitement. That's what was happening in the church in Ephesus.
Jesus said these Christians should change their hearts and do what they did in the beginning. That is a warning for us, too. Be sure that your love and service for God grows stronger every day. —DF

“God is love. Everyone who lives in love lives in God, and God lives in them.” 1 John 4:16b
PRAYER: Dear Father, I love You. I want my love for You to grow stronger every day. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Thorns
Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
Thuesday, February 2, 2016

Roses are very beautiful. But if I want to enjoy them,
I might be pricked by their thorns. These thorns can be a painful problem.
We all have problems in our lives that may cause us pain and sadness. We don't like these problems,
and we wish that we didn't have them. But painful problems can be important to us. We can learn from these problems. We may learn to be more patient or loving.

Our Bible verses today tell us
that Paul had a painful problem
in his life. We do not know what this problem was, but it made Paul suffer. Paul asked God to take away this problem, but God said to Paul, “My grace is all you need. Only when you are weak can everything be done completely by my power” (verse 9b).
Paul's problem helped him to be humble and to depend on God more. You may have a painful problem in your life. Ask God to help you be strong and to depend on Him. —GT

“I am glad when I am persecuted and have problems, because it is when I am weak that I am really strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10b
PRAYER: God, thank You for the problems in my life. Help me to learn from them and to depend on You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

—DJH*

Helping Others
Bible Reading: Acts 9:36-40
Wednesday, January 27, 2016

Our Bible Reading today talks about a woman named Tabitha. She lived in the city of Joppa. Tabitha liked to help people. She gave money to people who needed it and made clothes for women whose husbands had died.
One day Tabitha became sick and died. The women that Tabitha had helped were very sad. The Christians in Joppa sent two men to find Peter and bring him to Tabitha's house. When Peter arrived the women were crying. They showed Peter the clothes that Tabitha had made for them.
“Peter sent all the people out of the room. He knelt down and prayed. Then he turned to Tabitha's body and said, ‘Tabitha, stand up!’ She opened her eyes. When she saw Peter, she sat up” (verse 40). Then Peter showed the people that Tabitha was alive.

Tabitha is a good example for us. We should be like her and help people who are poor. When we help others, we are sharing God's love with them. Look for ways today to help people in need. —DJH*

“People everywhere in Joppa learned about this, and many believed in the Lord.” Acts 9:42
PRAYER: Father, I want to be like Tabitha and help other people. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

—JK

Children (3)
Bible Reading: 2 Kings 5:1-14
Tuesday, December 29, 2015

I love to be with children. Why? Because children like all people, no matter what color their skin is.
Our Bible Reading today is about a man named Naaman. He was an officer in the army of Aram. Aram's army came into Israel and took some people to be their slaves. The army took a little Israelite girl, and she became a servant to Naaman.
Naaman was sick with leprosy, a terrible skin disease. The little girl told Naaman about the prophet Elisha. She thought that Elisha could heal Naaman's leprosy. That servant girl was a slave, and she was from a different country. But she did not hate Naaman. The little girl wanted Naaman to be healed.

We should be like that little girl. We should not be prejudiced against people who are from a different country or whose skin is a different color. Christians need to remember that God loves all the people in the world.
Share Jesus with everyone you meet today! —JK

—BL

Thankfulness
Bible Reading: Psalm 136:1-9
Monday, September 7, 2015

Thankfulness When I was 43 years old, I married for the first time. We wanted to have children, but my wife was 40 years old. We waited for several years, hoping that we would have children. Finally, when I was 48 we got the news that my wife was pregnant with twins! On July 21, 2006, God blessed us with our daughters, Sarah and Danielle.
As my wife and I have raised our daughters, there have been many times when I was frustrated and tempted to lose my temper. But I have learned that the best way to overcome frustration is to be grateful. When I am struggling with my daughters, I remember all the years I waited to become a father. Then I feel thankful. I calm down and feel more patient.
Perhaps you will feel frustrated today at work, with your family or in line at the grocery store. Stop and think about your blessings. Our Bible Reading today has a list of things that you can be thankful for. Then ask God to help you be more patient and loving. —BL

1 Thessalonians (1)
Bible Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10
Saturday, September 13, 2014

1 Thessalonians (1) Today we will begin a series of devotions from 1 Thessalonians. Paul began his letter by praising the Christians in Thessalonica. He said that he thanked God for them. Paul was thankful for the work they had done because of their love and that they continued to be strong because of their hope in our Lord Jesus Christ (verse 3).
Paul goes on to explain why these things happened. Their work and strength happened because of their faith, love and hope in Jesus and because of the power of the Good News about Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gave these people joy even when they were suffering. Because of their faith, love and hope and the Holy Spirit working in their lives, they were an example for other believers.
Are you an example for other Christians? Let God give you strength and courage so others will see your love and faith today. —KR
