Hitchhiker Christians
Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 15:18-22
Friday, December 2, 2016

My friends and I were driving, and we saw a young hitchhiker. We picked him up and asked him where he was going. He said that it didn't make any difference — he was just out looking around!
It is too bad that many people are what I call “hitchhiker Christians.” These people go from church to church, not wanting to be committed to any church. These people are missing out on serving in a local ministry, receiving help from a pastor and developing relationships with other Christians.
Our Bible verses tell us about Ittai. He was a foreigner who served King David. When David told him to return home, Ittai answered (verse 21), “As the Lord lives, and as long as you live, I will stay with you, in life or death!” Ittai faithfully served King David as a commander in his army.
If you do not have a church where you can worship and serve, I encourage you to find one. Then commit yourself to being part of God's kingdom there. —BL

—DF

Faith Journey (8)
Bible Reading: Colossians 3:12-17
Wednesday, September 14, 2016

My faith in God has grown through the years as my husband and I have served God in several different areas in our church.
For 22 years, I taught a class for two to four-year-olds. But the church changed their program, and I was no longer needed. I was sad, but I knew that God had another place of service for me. Soon our pastor's wife asked me and my husband to start a class for college students. We had a wonderful ministry with those young people.
Later I went back to teaching a class for young children. That was a tiring job, but I really enjoyed it. After that, my husband and I took care of children while their parents were in a Bible study. That group was another blessing from God!
God has taught me that when one opportunity for service ends, He will show me something new that I can do for Him. In our Bible verses today Paul talks about how we should act as we serve God. Remember to do everything today for God! —DF

“Everything you say and everything you do should be done for Jesus your Lord. And in all you do, give thanks to God the Father through Jesus.” Colossians 3:17
PRAYER: God, thank You for giving me opportunities to serve You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Different Skills
Bible Reading: Romans 12:1-6a
Saturday, September 3, 2016

We all have something we want to do, but we can't do it. Why? Because we don’t have the skill to do that thing. For example, I would love to paint a beautiful picture, but I do not have the skill to draw and paint well.
Our Bible Reading today tells us that God has given each Christian different skills. But sometimes we become discouraged because people in the world tell us our skills are not important. Paul says in verse 2a, “Don't change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but let God change you inside with a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to understand and accept what God wants for you.”
God has given you skills to use in His kingdom. Maybe your skill is teaching a class or signing songs. Maybe your skill is taking care of children or visiting people in hospitals. Or maybe your skill is cleaning the church building or shoveling snow from the sidewalks.
Use your skills to serve God and bless His kingdom today! —KG

—DF

Seven Churches (3)
Bible Reading: Revelation 2:1-7
Sunday, April 3, 2016

The first message is to the church in the city of Ephesus. This city had a busy harbor. Many people traveled to Ephesus to worship the Roman goddess Diana. The main business of the city was making idols of Diana.
Jesus tells this church “I know what you do, how hard you work and never give up. I know that you don't accept evil people” (verse 2a). But then He gives them a warning. “But I have this against you: You have left the love you had in the beginning”(verse 4).
When we first become Christians, we are excited to share the Good News about Jesus. We can't wait to tell our friends and family about Him. But when we face troubles, we sometimes lose some of our excitement. That's what was happening in the church in Ephesus.
Jesus said these Christians should change their hearts and do what they did in the beginning. That is a warning for us, too. Be sure that your love and service for God grows stronger every day. —DF

—EP*

Serving
Bible Reading: 1 Peter 4:7-11
Sunday, March 6, 2016

Do you always feel like serving other people? If you see homeless people on the street, do you walk away? Or do you give them some food and a smile? When you meet a person who is going through hard times, do you keep quiet? Or do you share a hug and words of encouragement?
Sometimes fear, doubt or pride stop us from serving and loving other people. We may feel that we are not good enough to help others. Or, we may feel that we are too good to serve other people. But we should remember that every time we serve others, we have an opportunity to show Jesus to them. Verse 10 of our Bible Reading says, “God has shown you his grace in many different ways. So be good servants and use whatever gift he has given you in a way that will best serve each other.”
We have many opportunities each day to serve other people and help them learn about Jesus. Use your talents to serve people who need to know about Jesus today. —EP*

—AT

Don't Wait
Bible Reading: Acts 24:22-27
Thursday, February 11, 2016

Many people use their time wisely. They set aside time for Bible study, going to church or helping others.
But some people do not use their time wisely. Instead, they delay making a decision to follow God or delay using their time to serve Him. In our Bible Reading today Paul spoke to the Roman governor, Felix. Paul told Felix about Jesus. “But Felix became afraid when Paul spoke about things like doing right, self-control, and the judgment that will come in the future” (verse 25a).
These verses seem to indicate that Felix knew that he should change his life and follow God. But he was afraid. So he told Paul, “Go away now. When I have more time, I will call for you” (verse 25b). The Bible does not tell us if Felix ever decided to follow God.
Maybe you know that you need to follow God. Don't wait — give your life to Him today. Or maybe you know that you need to use your time to serve God. Don't wait — start serving Him right now! —AT

—JP*

2 Thessalonians (5)
Bible Reading: 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13
Sunday, January 17, 2016

Today we will continue to think about the same Bible verses we read yesterday. These verses remind me of a story someone told me.
A man needed to move to a new house, so he asked some friends to help him. Several friends showed up to help him move his furniture and household goods. When they were finished moving, the man ordered pizza to feed his friends and to thank them for their help. One friend, who was too lazy to help move, thought he should get some pizza, too.
That is what Paul was talking about in our Bible verses. Some Christians were refusing to work. These people wanted other Christians to feed them and take care of them. But Paul said that Christians should work and “earn their own food” (verse 12b).
We need to make sure that we are working hard to take care of ourselves and our families. And we should be willing to use our time and energy to help others. —JP*

—GT

Birth Story (3)
Bible Reading: Matthew 20:25-28
Monday, December 14, 2015

On that first Christmas, Mary gave birth to a servant. In verse 28b of our Bible Reading today, Jesus talked about Himself. “The Son of Man did not come for people to serve him. He came to serve others and to give his life to save many people.” Jesus said that He was born to be a servant.
Jesus served both God and people. How? Jesus healed people. Jesus taught about God's kingdom. Jesus prayed for people. Jesus told people about God's plan of salvation. Jesus prepared His disciples to continue His work after He returned to heaven. Most importantly, Jesus obeyed God and kept God's law perfectly. Jesus made it possible for us to live forever with Him.
God wants us to be servants, too. Like Jesus, we are all born to serve God and each other. I hope you will follow Jesus’ example and faithfully serve both God and other people. —GT

Jesus (4)
Bible Reading: Matthew 26:26-30
Monday, November 16, 2015

The Bible describes many Jewish ceremonies. Some of these ceremonies required drinking a cup of wine. Accepting and drinking a cup of wine showed commitment or a promise.

In our Bible Reading for today, Jesus shared the Passover meal with His disciples. Jesus knew that this was the last time He would celebrate this meal with them. When Jesus took the cup and drank from it, He was promising to follow God’s plan for Him. God’s plan was for Him to die. Jesus was willing to accept what God wanted Him to do. Jesus was willing to die for our sins!

What does God have planned for your life? Are you willing to serve as part of a ministry in your church? Are you willing to be a faithful marriage partner and a good parent to your children? Are you willing to share the Good News with your neighbors?

Think about Jesus and His willingness to do whatever God wanted Him to do. Then promise to serve and obey God every day. —JK

—BL

Who is the Boss?
Bible Reading: Colossians 3:22-25
Wednesday, November 11, 2015

At my job, I often walk by other people’s computers. I can see that they are shopping online, watching videos or surfing the Internet instead of working. These people only do a little work. Why? Maybe they are lazy or they do not respect their co-workers. Or maybe they see that their boss doesn’t do much work either.

Our Bible Reading today shows us a completely different attitude about work. Verses 23-24 tell us, “In all the work you are given, do the best you can. Work as though you are working for the Lord, not an earthly master...Yes, you are serving Christ. He is your real Master.” As Christians, we should work to please Jesus. He is the One we are truly working for!

Maybe you don’t have a good earthly boss. But remember that we serve Jesus who knows and loves us and rewards us generously. We are here on earth to serve and honor Him! —BL

—MK

Love Serves Others
Bible Reading: Galatians 5:13-18
Tuesday, October 20, 2015

Love Serves Others Jesus said, “Do for others what you would want them to do for you” (Matthew 7:12a). Jesus also said that the most important command is to “love the Lord your God,” and the second most important command is to “love your neighbor the same as you love yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39).
Jesus showed us the way to obey these commands. Jesus showed love for God by always obeying God’s Word, by communicating with God through prayer and by resisting temptations to sin. Jesus also showed His love for God by loving other people.
Jesus showed His love for other people by serving them. When people were hungry, Jesus fed them. When people were sick, Jesus healed them. Jesus also shared the Word of God with people who needed to hear it. Finally, Jesus took the punishment for people’s sins when He died on the cross.
Look at the ways Jesus showed His love. Then think about how you can copy His example today. —MK

Moving (5) The man who bought our acreage also owns all the farm land around the acreage. He plans to tear down our house and buildings, plow up the soil and plant corn and soy beans.
I remember many good things about living in that house. My husband and I planted many trees and bushes. We remodeled several rooms in the house. It is sad to think that all of that will be destroyed.
But our houses and our possessions are not really important. When we die, we can't take anything with us. What is really important is our relationship with God and how we serve Him here on earth.
In our Bible Reading, Jesus says that the most important thing is “God's kingdom and doing what he wants you to do” (verse 33b). So don't worry about your possessions here on earth. Instead, focus on following and obeying God. —JK
“So I tell you, don't worry about the things you need to live — what you will eat, drink, or wear. Life is more important than food, and the body is more important than what you put on it.” Matthew 6:25
PRAYER: Dear Father, I want to follow and obey You today. In Jesus' name. Amen.
