Jesus' Life (3)
Bible Reading: Matthew 3:13-17
Saturday, October 15, 2016

I have a delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe that was passed down to me from my great-grandma. I have made these cookies so many times that now I have the recipe memorized.
But I have learned that I should never miss one single ingredient of the recipe. If I do, the cookies will turn out differently than my great-grandma's cookies. If I follow the recipe exactly, I know that the cookies will be delicious!
Our Bible Reading today tells us about Jesus' baptism. In verse 15 Jesus said, “We should do whatever God says is right.” Jesus wanted to obey God and do what is right. Why? Because He wanted to please God. This is a good example for us. We should always try to do what is right.
I am careful to follow my grandma's cookie recipe. In the same way, we should be careful to study the Bible and follow God's plan for our lives. —MP*

“But when you look into God's perfect law that sets people free, pay attention to it. If you do what it says, you will have God's blessing. Never just listen to his teaching and forget what you heard.” James 1:25

Old Testament (7)
Bible Reading: Joshua 1:1-9
Saturday, October 1, 2016

In our Bible verses for today, God spoke to Joshua. Moses had died, and Joshua had become the leader of the Israelites. God encouraged Joshua to be strong and brave. God also reminded Joshua to study His commands and obey them.
If I read my Bible every day, I feel peace and comfort. Studying the Bible helps me to stay on the right path and not wander away from God. Reading and remembering God's words helps me to avoid doing wrong things. The more you read and study the Bible, the easier it is to obey God.
When Jesus was on earth, He encouraged His followers to obey His teachings. In John 14:23 Jesus said, “All who love me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them. My Father and I will come to them and live with them.”
Do you really love Jesus? Then obey His Word today! —RF*

“Always remember what is written in that book of law. Speak about that book and study it day and night. Then you can be sure to obey what is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything you do.” Joshua 1:8

—RF*

Old Testament (6)
Bible Reading: Exodus 20:1-17
Friday, September 30, 2016

God gave His people, the Israelites, many rules to help them live good lives. Some of these rules are listed in our Bible Reading today. Often we call these rules “The Ten Commandments.”
Some people think that Christians should not pay attention to the Ten Commandments because they are in the Old Testament. But Jesus talked about these commandments a lot. In Matthew, chapter 5, Jesus said that wanting to break these commands in our heart is the same as doing the wrong thing.
In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus tells us the two most important commands we must obey. “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.’
If we obey these two commands, we will have a good relationship with God and get along with other people. —RF*

“But I will be very kind to those who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of generations.” Exodus 20:6
PRAYER: Father, thank You for showing me how I can please You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Psalm 119 (1)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:1-8
Thursday, September 1, 2016

Over the next few months, I will be sharing some thoughts from Psalms, chapter 119.
Psalm 119 emphasizes the importance of God and His Word, the Bible. Verse 2 of our Bible Reading today tells us that people who follow God's rules “seek him with all their heart.” The next six verses tell us how these people seek God. These people follow God’s ways (verse 3) and obey them (verse 4). These people also want to be more faithful to God (verse 5) and to praise Him (verse 7).
The writer of this psalm ends this section by saying, “I will obey your laws, so please don't leave me!” We should always want God to be close to us. Sometimes we can feel overwhelmed and wonder if God is really with us. But our Bible verses assure us that if we seek God, He will be with us.
Do you want to serve God? Do you want God to be close to you? Then study His Word and be faithful to Him. —BH

Jesus (7)
Bible Reading: Mark 15:16-20
Sunday, August 28, 2016

Many stories tell about a king and ordinary people. The ordinary people worship the king and do many things for the king. The king even sends people to fight a war. Some of the people die for the king. These people believe they belong to the king.
In verse 18 of our Bible Reading today, the Jews made fun of Jesus and called Him “king of the Jews.” As a Christian, I know that Jesus is truly my King. He is much more important than all the kings in all the books I have read. Jesus is the best king. Why? Because He died for us. Jesus gave up His life so we can have eternal life with Him.
Jesus also tells the truth. Because Jesus tells the truth, I trust Him. Jesus is perfect! He has never sinned or done anything wrong. Jesus is the best King to follow.
Is Jesus your King? Are you willing to obey and serve Him? Do you worship Him? Are you willing to die for Him? Give your life to King Jesus and follow Him every day! —CPE*

“Praise Him! Welcome! God bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord! God bless the King of Israel!” John 12:13b

—NM

God’s Plan
Bible Reading: Jonah 1:1-17
Monday, January 11, 2016

Several inches of snow fell on the ground overnight. When Scott and his brother woke up, they didn't want to go to school. All they wanted to do was play in the snow. So the two boys built a snow wall across the road. They hoped the school bus couldn’t get to their house. But soon the bus came and smashed through the snow wall. Scott and his brother's work was destroyed and they had to go to school anyway.

In our Bible verses we read about another person who had his plans destroyed. Jonah didn't want to obey God and go to the city of Nineveh. So he got on a ship and tried to run away from God. But Jonah ended up inside a big fish. Jonah repented, and God saved him. Finally, Jonah obeyed God and went to Nineveh.
The story about Jonah teaches us to obey God and His plan for our lives. Don't rebel against God. Trust Him and follow His leading in your life. —NM

While Jonah was in the stomach of the fish, he prayed to the Lord his God. He said, ‘I was in very bad trouble. I called to the Lord for help, and he answered me.’” Jonah 2:1-2a
PRAYER: Father, I am willing to obey Your plans for my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

JB*

Amazing God

Bible Reading: Exodus 15:1-18

Sunday, October 25, 2015

In our Bible Reading today we find a song that Moses and the Israelites sang to God. Why did they sing this song? Because God had just led them through the Red Sea and destroyed the Egyptian army.
Just imagine that you were there with the Israelites walking on dry ground through the Red Sea. Do you see the great wall of water on either side? Do you see the fish and other sea creatures swimming in the water around you? How awesome and terrifying that must have been!

After the Israelites reached the other side of the sea, they must have been frightened to see the Egyptian army coming after them. The Israelites must have been amazed as God caused the Red Sea to flow back as it was before. The Egyptian army was drowned.

We must never forget how powerful and holy God is! Verse 11b tells us, “No, there are no gods like you — you are wonderfully holy! You are amazingly powerful! You do great miracles!” —JB*
The Lord is my strength. He saves me, and I sing songs of praise to him. He is my God, and I praise him. He is the God of my ancestors and I honor him.” Exodus 15:2
PRAYER: Dear Lord, I want to trust You to take care of me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

-JK

Sea of Galilee (5)
Bible Reading: John 21:1-14
Saturday, September 26, 2015

Sea of Galilee (5) Today we read more about Peter and the other disciples. Jesus had died and risen from the dead. Jesus was by the Sea of Galilee. Several of Jesus’ followers were in a boat. They had fished all night but had not caught any fish.
Jesus said to them (verse 6b), “Throw your net into the water on the right side of your boat. You will find some fish there.” Jesus’ followers obeyed Him. They caught so many fish that they couldn’t pull the net into the boat!
Verse 14 says, “This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his followers after he was raised from death.” Jesus wanted His followers to know for sure that He had risen from the dead. Why? Because Jesus wanted them to know that He has power over death. That means Christians will also live again after they die.
Do you want to live forever? I do! But I don’t want to live forever in a world full of sin. I want to live forever with God and Jesus. That will be wonderful! —JK

God's Teachings
Bible Reading: Psalm 1:1-6
Tuesday, September 8, 2015

God's Teachings I admire people who are going through troubles but still have a strong faith in God. How are these people able to stand firm and not give up? I believe we can find the answer to that question in our Bible Reading today.
People who have a strong faith in God “love the Lord's teachings and think about them day and night” (verse 2b). This means that they enjoy obeying God's commands, and they are always thinking about ways to follow Him more closely.
Our Bible verses tell us that God will bless the people who have a strong faith in Him. The writer of Psalm 1 compares these people to a strong tree. A strong tree will produce good fruit. In the same way, God will bless a person with strong faith, and everything they do will be successful (verse 3).
Do you love to study the Bible? Do you think about it all the time? Read God's Word today and help your faith to grow. —NW

Lemonade
Bible Reading: John 4:5-30
Thursday, July 9, 2015

Lemonade When the weather is hot, it is good to drink a refreshing glass of lemonade. During the summer, I make many pitchers of lemonade for my husband when he is working outside in the hot sun.
In our Bible verses today, John tells us about a time when Jesus met a woman from Samaria. They met at a well, and Jesus asked the woman for a drink of water. Jesus continued talking with the woman, and in verse 10 He said, “You don’t know what God can give you. And you don’t know who I am...If you knew, you would have asked me, and I would have given you living water.”
The “living water” that Jesus was talking about is Himself. If we follow and obey Him, He will bless us and give us eternal life. “The water I give people will be like a spring flowing inside them. It will bring them eternal life” (verse 14b).
Are you “thirsty” for God’s love and help? Turn to Him today. Read His Word and obey it! —JK

-JK

Hot Weather
Bible Reading: Daniel 3:1-30
Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Hot Weather It is summer here in Iowa. Today and for the next few days we will look at some things that Iowans experience during summer. One thing that we have every summer is hot weather. We usually have several weeks when the temperatures are 90 degrees and higher.
In our Bible Reading today, we learn about three men who experienced some very hot temperatures! Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego loved and obeyed God. The king of Babylon made a golden idol and commanded that everyone bow down to the idol. But Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow to the idol. So the king threw them into a hot furnace. This furnace was so hot that it “killed the strong soldiers…when they went close to the fire” (verse 22). But God saved Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from the furnace.
God protected Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. He will protect you, too. Obey God’s Word and serve Him today. —JK
