God in Us
Bible Reading: Philippians 2:12-13
Wednesday, October 26, 2016

Elisha threw a stick into the water and a lost ax head floated to the top of the water (2 Kings 6:1-7). The Israelites marched around the city of Jericho, blowing trumpets and shouting, and the walls of the city fell down (Joshua 6:20). What do these two events have in common? They are both miracles. In each case, God took a bad situation and used His power to make it better. Normally, iron ax heads don't float on the water and people marching around a city do not cause walls to fall down. But when we depend on God to help us, wonderful things can happen.
Verse 13 of our Bible Reading reminds us that God works in our lives. “He helps you want to do what pleases him, and he gives you the power to do it” (verse 13b). God and Christians are a team, working together to make great things happen in His kingdom!
Allow God to work in your life today to bring honor and glory to Him. —BL

“And there are different ways that God works in people, but it is the same God who works in all of us to do everything.” 1 Corinthians 12:6
PRAYER: Father, please work in my life today to do great things for You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—CPE*

Jesus' Life (7)
Bible Reading: Matthew 26:47-56
Wednesday, October 19, 2016

Our Bible verses today tell us that a big group of people went to arrest Jesus. Among those people was one of His disciples, Judas. When the men grabbed Jesus to arrest Him, another follower took his sword and cut off one of the servant's ears.
What did Jesus do? Did He fight back? Did He try to run away? Did Jesus prevent the men from arresting Him? Did He call angels to come and rescue Him? No! Jesus allowed the men to arrest Him. Why did Jesus do that? He knew it was God's plan for Him to be arrested. Jesus obeyed His Father's will and fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies.
Be like Jesus. Read the Bible so that you will know what God’s plan is for you. And be sure to obey His will every day of your life. —CPE*

“Then Jesus said to the crowd, ‘Why do you come to get me with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal. Every day I sat in the Temple area teaching. You did not arrest me. But all these things have happened to show the full meaning of what the prophets wrote.’” Matthew 26:55-56a
PRAYER: Dear God, help me to know Your plan and obey You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Jesus' Life (6)
Bible Reading: Matthew 26:36-46
Tuesday,October 18, 2016

Sometimes we know that we need to do something for God, but we are not sure we want to do it. Maybe you have felt that way before.
Jesus knew God wanted Him to die on the cross. But His human nature wanted to avoid the pain, suffering and humiliation. So in our Bible verses Jesus asked God, “My Father, if it is possible, don’t make me drink from this cup” (verse 39b). Jesus was asking God if there was another way He could obey Him. But then Jesus added, “But do what you want, not what I want” (verse 39b).
When we want to avoid doing something for God, we may ask Him if there is another way to serve Him. Maybe God will show us another way or maybe He will be silent. God's silence means that there is no other way. God expects us to obey Him and accept His will.
Jesus is our perfect example of how we should follow God. Humbly serve and obey God today! —PD*

“Then Jesus went away a second time and prayed, ‘My Father, if I must do this and it is not possible for me to escape it, then I pray that what you want will be done.’” Matthew 26:42
PRAYER: Lord, I know that You will always take care of me. Help me to humbly obey You today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Bible Reading: Matthew 3:13-17

I have a delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe that was passed down to me from my great-grandma. I have made these cookies so many times that now I have the recipe memorized.
But I have learned that I should never miss one single ingredient of the recipe. If I do, the cookies will turn out differently than my great-grandma's cookies. If I follow the recipe exactly, I know that the cookies will be delicious!
Our Bible Reading today tells us about Jesus' baptism. In verse 15 Jesus said, “We should do whatever God says is right.” Jesus wanted to obey God and do what is right. Why? Because He wanted to please God. This is a good example for us. We should always try to do what is right.
I am careful to follow my grandma's cookie recipe. In the same way, we should be careful to study the Bible and follow God's plan for our lives. —MP*

“But when you look into God's perfect law that sets people free, pay attention to it. If you do what it says, you will have God's blessing. Never just listen to his teaching and forget what you heard.” James 1:25
PRAYER: Dear God, show me how I can obey You. Thank You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

God's Way
Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Monday, September 5, 2016

To back out of my garage correctly, I need to slowly back straight out of the garage. Then when the car is out of the garage, I need to back the car at an angle. This way is different, but my husband taught me to do this so I do not drive on our grass.
Sometimes it is hard to do things differently. The world tells us to get as much money as possible and keep it for ourselves. But God's way is different. He says we should “give to others” (Luke 6:38a). When someone hurts us, we want to hurt them back. But God’s way says, “Love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44).
In our Bible Reading today, Samuel thought that he would choose a new king by the way he looked. But God said, “People judge by what is on the outside, but the Lord looks at the heart” (verse 7b).
We will face problems in life. But we need to remember that we won't always understand God's way for our life. Depend on Him today. God always knows what is best for you! —SAH

“The Lord says, ‘My thoughts are not like yours. Your ways are not like mine.’” Isaiah 55:8

Different Skills
Bible Reading: Romans 12:1-6a
Saturday, September 3, 2016

We all have something we want to do, but we can't do it. Why? Because we don’t have the skill to do that thing. For example, I would love to paint a beautiful picture, but I do not have the skill to draw and paint well.
Our Bible Reading today tells us that God has given each Christian different skills. But sometimes we become discouraged because people in the world tell us our skills are not important. Paul says in verse 2a, “Don't change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but let God change you inside with a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to understand and accept what God wants for you.”
God has given you skills to use in His kingdom. Maybe your skill is teaching a class or signing songs. Maybe your skill is taking care of children or visiting people in hospitals. Or maybe your skill is cleaning the church building or shoveling snow from the sidewalks.
Use your skills to serve God and bless His kingdom today! —KG

“We all have different gifts. Each gift came because of the grace God gave us.” Romans 12:6a
PRAYER: Father, thank You for giving me skills so I can serve You and other Christians. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
