—SH*

Bible Reading: Revelation 3:7-13
Saturday, October 31, 2015

In the book of Revelation, Jesus spoke to seven churches. Each time Jesus gave a message for a church, He ended the message with these words: “Every person that hears these things should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches” (Revelation 3:13).

What does it mean to “listen to what the Spirit says to the churches”? When we have a close relationship with God, we will pay attention to what He says. Maybe a preacher tells us to stop doing what is wrong, but we choose to ignore the preacher’s words. We have listened to the words, but we do not want to repent. But if we are truly following God, we will pay attention to Him and the Holy Spirit. We will always choose to obey God and His Word.

If we pay attention to God’s words every day, it will be easier to obey Him. Then we will receive the promise of eternal life with Him. Praise God! —SH*

Bible Reading: Hebrews 4:1-7

In the Old Testament, the people heard God speak through the prophets. But these people ignored the prophets. Our Bible Reading today tells us that God’s plan of salvation was for His special people, the Jews. But many Jews rejected Jesus. So God also offered salvation to the Gentiles (non-Jews).

People today read Bible stories. But most of the time, they do not change the way they live. People read God’s wonderful promises, but they are still sad. What’s wrong with these people? I will answer that question by giving you an example.

Suppose I have a bar of soap. That soap will not make me clean until I use it. It’s the same with the Bible. Only reading the Bible is not enough. We need to believe it and obey it, too.

Don’t be like people who hear God’s Word and do nothing. Ask God to help you put His Word into action in your life. —SH*

—SH*

Could you work really hard and make a blind person see? Or could you read a recipe and change water into wine? Could you learn about wheelchairs and make a lame person walk? Those are all silly questions. We can’t do anything to make those things happen.

But sometimes I think I can do God’s work on my own. I try to do things without depending on God’s power to help me. I need to remember that only God can help me live a pure life. Only God can give me real peace in my heart. Only God can forgive my sins and give me eternal life with Him.
In verse 5b of our Bible Reading Paul tells the Christians in Galatia, “God gives you his Spirit and works miracles among you because you heard the message about Jesus and believed it.

Sometimes I wish I had more faith. Then I think about today’s Bible Reading. Verse 17a says, “So faith comes from hearing the Good News.” So I can have more faith by hearing the Good News. But some people are deaf. How can they have faith if they cannot “hear” the Good News?

Our Bible verses are not talking about hearing with our physical ears. Instead, they are talking about reading God’s Word and paying attention to it.

Sometimes we are confused and don’t understand what is happening to us. But if we read the Bible, we can learn that God knows about our problems. We can also learn that God has a plan for our lives and that He wants to make good things happen to us. Then we can feel better. Why? Because we know God is speaking to us through His Word.

Do you need more faith? Read the Bible. Let God speak to you through the Bible verses you read. —SH*

Sometimes we are like the people Jesus was talking about. We read a Bible verse that tells us to stop sinning. But we continue to sin. Or a Bible verse tells us to praise God. Instead, we grumble and complain.
Some people read God’s Word but they do not pay attention to it. Maybe you read the Bible, but you ignore what it tells you to do. The problem is not your ears. The problem is your heart and your attitude. You need to pay attention to God and His words in the Bible.

DB

Curtains
Bible Reading: Exodus 26:31-36
Monday, October 26, 2015

One thing I enjoy doing is touring old mansions. I always notice the tall windows and the fancy curtains. I wonder how they kept those windows and curtains clean!

Our Bible Reading today tells us about a fancy curtain in the Holy Tent. God designed this curtain, so we know that it must have been very beautiful. Verse 31 says, “Use fine linen and make a special curtain for the inside of the Holy Tent. Use blue, purple, and red yarn and sew pictures of Cherub angels into the curtain.” This curtain separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. One time a year, the high priest would enter the Most Holy Place to make a sacrifice for the sins of the Israelites.

The New Testament tells us about a similar curtain that hung in the temple in Jerusalem. When Jesus died on the cross, that curtain was torn in two. That shows us that Jesus is the only one who can forgive our sins and bring us close to God. Thank God for sending Jesus to die for your sins! —DB

Amazing God

Bible Reading: Exodus 15:1-18

Sunday, October 25, 2015

In our Bible Reading today we find a song that Moses and the Israelites sang to God. Why did they sing this song? Because God had just led them through the Red Sea and destroyed the Egyptian army.
Just imagine that you were there with the Israelites walking on dry ground through the Red Sea. Do you see the great wall of water on either side? Do you see the fish and other sea creatures swimming in the water around you? How awesome and terrifying that must have been!

After the Israelites reached the other side of the sea, they must have been frightened to see the Egyptian army coming after them. The Israelites must have been amazed as God caused the Red Sea to flow back as it was before. The Egyptian army was drowned.

We must never forget how powerful and holy God is! Verse 11b tells us, “No, there are no gods like you — you are wonderfully holy! You are amazingly powerful! You do great miracles!” —JB*

God, My Shepherd

Bible Reading: Psalm 23:1-6
Saturday, October 24, 2015

I am deaf, but I have been attending a hearing school in Burundi for five years. Before I started going to the hearing school, I was afraid I would not pass the entrance tests.

As I was thinking about the entrance tests, I remembered Psalm 23. Verse 1 says, “The Lord is my shepherd. I will always have everything I need.” After I thought about those verses, I was comforted to know that God was with me.

I passed the tests and was able to start school soon after that. As I studied, I continued to pray and ask God to help me. At the end of the term, I was second in my class. I thanked God for helping me do well in school. I am now studying computer science and have two more years until I graduate.

God will take care of you, too. Talk to Him today. Tell Him your worries and thank Him for all He does for you. God will truly be your Shepherd. —PN*

Watching for Jesus

Bible Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Friday, October 23, 2015

Several times I have waited for a friend or loved one to arrive at the airport. As I waited, I was excited for their plane to land. There are always many people in airports watching the sky. They hope to see the airplane that they have been waiting for.

As Christians we should be watching for Jesus to return. We know that the Bible is true. The Bible says that Jesus will come back someday. That should make us very excited. Verse 16a of our Bible Reading tells us about that. “The Lord himself will come down from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God.

It will be wonderful to see Jesus coming. We need to be watching for His return. It could be today, next year or twenty years from now. Only God knows the time when Jesus will come (Matthew 24:36).

Look forward to that wonderful day when we will be able to live forever with Jesus! —PD

God Pays Attention
Bible Reading: Psalm 66:16-20
Thursday, October 22, 2015

God Pays Attention Sometimes I talk with a person who just talks and talks and talks. Soon I stop listening to them. I begin to look around and look up at the ceiling. My mind wanders, and I ask myself, “When are they going to stop talking?”
In that situation, I am not paying attention to the person who is talking. But it is always different with God. Verse 20a of our Bible Reading today says, “Praise God! He did not turn away from me — he listened to my prayer.” This verse means that when I talk to God, He doesn't think about other things or look away from me. God pays attention to my prayers!
God listens to me when I talk with Him. He pays attention to every word or sign that I use. And He always answers my prayers in His time and in a way that is always best for me.

—MK

Love But Not Like?
Bible Reading: Luke 10:25-37
Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Love But Not Like? Many Christians say, “You have to love everyone, but you don't have to like them.” When a person says this, they are probably thinking about someone they do not get along with. The person who says this is making an excuse. Why? Because they do not want to associate with that person.
Does this agree with the kind of love we read about in the Bible? No, the Bible teaches us to not worry about liking someone. Instead, we should reach out to all people, even someone who refuses to love us!
In today's Bible Reading, Jesus taught us that we should not reject people who are different than we are. We should show these people our love by helping them. The Samaritan in our Bible verses could have walked away from the injured man. Instead, he helped him.
Jesus wants us to be like the Samaritan. We should “go and do the same” for other people (verse 37b). —MK

—MK

Love Serves Others
Bible Reading: Galatians 5:13-18
Tuesday, October 20, 2015

Love Serves Others Jesus said, “Do for others what you would want them to do for you” (Matthew 7:12a). Jesus also said that the most important command is to “love the Lord your God,” and the second most important command is to “love your neighbor the same as you love yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39).
Jesus showed us the way to obey these commands. Jesus showed love for God by always obeying God’s Word, by communicating with God through prayer and by resisting temptations to sin. Jesus also showed His love for God by loving other people.
Jesus showed His love for other people by serving them. When people were hungry, Jesus fed them. When people were sick, Jesus healed them. Jesus also shared the Word of God with people who needed to hear it. Finally, Jesus took the punishment for people’s sins when He died on the cross.
Look at the ways Jesus showed His love. Then think about how you can copy His example today. —MK
