—SAH

Seeds
Bible Reading: Mark 4:13-20
Wednesday, November 30, 2016

I spent many years teaching math to students. Now I am retired. But God continues to teach me lessons about Himself and His Word.
Our Bible Reading is a story that Jesus told about planting seeds. The seeds in this story are God's teaching. As I was working in my garden recently, I thought about these verses. If seeds stay in the package, they can't be planted. When they are taken out of the package and planted in good soil, they begin to grow. With sunlight and water, these seeds will produce fruit, flowers or vegetables.
When I decided to follow Jesus as my Lord and Savior, God planted the seeds of His teaching in my heart. Then I started to grow as a Christian and to share the Good News about Jesus with others.
I hope you will be like the good ground in Jesus’ story. I hope that you will receive His teaching and grow as a Christian. —SAH

“And others are like the seed planted on the good ground. They hear the teaching and accept it. Then they grow and produce a good crop.” Mark 4:20a
PRAYER: Father, help me to receive Your Word and to share it with other people. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Psalm 119 (15)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:113-120
Tuesday, November 29, 2016

In verse 114a of Psalm 119, the writer says to God, “Hide me and protect me.” When I am surrounded by problems in my life, I want God to hide and protect me, too.
I have found a way so that I can feel like God is hiding me and protecting me. I have a corner of my living room set up just for my Bible study and prayer time. When I sit there, I read my Bible or books written by Christian authors. Or I spend time praying and praising God.
This time in my special corner helps me prepare for my day. It gives me peace so I can go out in the world and face conflicts and problems. I look forward to this time every day when I can be quiet and renew my spirit.
Maybe you can have a special place where you can be alone with God. Ask Him to hide you and protect you and fill you with His Word. —BH

“Support me, Lord, as you promised, and I will live. I trust in you, so don't disappoint me.” Psalm 119:116
PRAYER: Thank You, Lord, for being with me each day. You always comfort me and fill me with Your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Training
Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:23-27
Monday, November 28, 2016

Every four years I watch the Olympics on TV. I am always amazed by all the training the athletes go through so that they can compete in the games. These men and women work very hard to get their bodies in the best shape possible. They each try to win a gold medal.
In our Bible Reading today, Paul talks about running a race and getting the prize. Paul says that athletes train and win a prize. This prize is “one that doesn't last. But our prize is one that will last forever” (verse 25b). What is this prize that will last forever? The prize is much better than a gold medal. It is eternal life with God!
Just as an athlete trains for the Olympics, Christians need to train themselves to have self-control and to be like Jesus. This training must happen every day. And they must not give up. They must keep focused on the prize of heaven.
Do you want to receive the prize of eternal life with God? Be like Jesus today! —CS

“You know that in a race all the runners run, but only one runner gets the prize. So run like that. Run to win!” 1 Corinthians 9:24
PRAYER: Father, I pray that You will be with me today and help me be like Jesus. In His name. Amen.

—BH

Psalm 119 (14)
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:105-112
Sunday, November 27, 2016

Verse 108a of our Bible Reading says, “Lord, accept the praise I want to give you.” This section of Psalm 119 lists many reasons for praising God.
Several years ago my husband died. It was a hard struggle for me to raise my sons. I suffered emotionally, and I also had many physical problems. Every day I would pray and ask God to help me with my problems. Then one day as I was praying, I stopped. I realized that I needed to praise God, too.
I had been so busy thinking about my problems that I had forgotten about the many things I could praise God for — my sons, Christians who encouraged me, people who prayed for me and most of all, God who took care of me every day!
As I started to spend more time praising God, I realized that my problems and pain were not as bad as before. Praising God encouraged and strengthened me! Take time to praise God today! —BH

Good News
Bible Reading: Romans 1:1-4
Saturday, November 26, 2016

In our Bible verses today, Paul said that his work was to tell the Good News. “The Good News is about God's Son, Jesus Christ our Lord” (verse 3).
As Christians, our job is to tell the Good News, too. But where should we go to tell the Good News about Jesus? Look at the word “NEWS.” The “N” could stand for North, the “E” for East, the “W” for West and the “S” for South. We should go everywhere — in all directions — to tell other people about Jesus and His wonderful plan of salvation. Maybe you can go to neighbors who live close to you. Maybe you can go to another town. Or maybe you can go on a mission trip to another country. Wherever you go, you can share about Jesus.
When Jesus was ready to leave the earth and return to heaven, He told His disciples, “So go and make followers of all people in the world” (Matthew 28:19a) That command is for you, too. Where will you share about Jesus today? —ST*

“God promised long ago through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures to give this Good News to his people.” Romans 1:2
PRAYER: Dear God, I want to tell people the Good News about Jesus today. In His name. Amen.

—JK

Focus on Jesus
Bible Reading: Hebrews 12:1-3
Friday, November 25, 2016

Last night I remembered that my husband had recently bought some ice cream. I looked in the freezer, but I could not find the ice cream. I was puzzled, but I kept on looking. Finally I found the ice cream – in the refrigerator! So I had a bowl of very soft ice cream!
Sometimes we are distracted in our everyday life. Then we may forget to do things or we may put things in the wrong place. But it is really bad when we become distracted in our spiritual life. Our Bible verses compare life to a race. If a runner becomes distracted and wanders off the course, he will not win the race. In the same way, if we become distracted from following Jesus, we become spiritually weak. Then it is easier to give in to the devil's temptations.
It is important for you to focus on your family and your job today. But it is even more important for you to keep focused on Jesus. Don't let the distractions of the world stop you from following Him. —JK

“We must never stop looking to Jesus. He is the leader of our faith, and he is the one who makes our faith complete.” Hebrews 12:2a
PRAYER: Father, help me to keep my life focused on Jesus today. In His name. Amen.

Why Thank God?
Bible Reading: Exodus 15:1-18
Thursday, November 24, 2016

Today's Bible Reading is a song that Moses and the Israelites sang to God. Verse 2 says, “The Lord is my strength. He saves me, and I sing songs of praise to him.” This song was a way for Moses and the people to thank God for His many blessings.
There are many reasons why we should thank God. Let's look at a few reasons that we can read in the Bible. Job 36:26 tells us, “Yes, God is great.” 2 Peter 3:9 says that “God is patient” with us. Romans 5:8 reminds us that “Christ died for us while we were still sinners, and by this God showed how much he loves us.” Wow! God is great, He is patient and He loves us.
One of the greatest reasons why we should thank God is because He forgives us. 1 John 1:9 says, “But if we confess our sins, God will forgive us. We can trust God to do this. He always does what is right. He will make us clean from all the wrong things we have done.”
Take time to celebrate and thank God today. Then tell other people what God has done for you. —GT

“Whatever happens, always be thankful. This is how God wants you to live in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I give You all my thanks and my praise. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—GT

Prayer Turkey
Bible Reading: Psalm 136:1-9
Wednesday, November 23, 2016

On Thanksgiving Day in America, many families prepare a turkey for their dinner. So around Thanksgiving time, some people make craft projects that look like turkeys.
Maybe you can make a “prayer turkey” to help you and your family remember to thank God for all He has done for you. Place your hand on a piece of paper and draw around it. Draw a turkey face on your thumb outline and color the four fingers to look like turkey feathers. Then write above each finger things that you are thankful for. Maybe you can write salvation, family, friends, food or other things that you want to thank God for. Then hang your turkey some place where you will see it every day.
Our Bible verses from Psalms today list many reasons that we can be thankful. Each verse reminds us that God loves us and is faithful. God has done so many wonderful things for us. Give thanks to Him today! —GT

Thanksgiving Recipes
Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Tuesday, November 22, 2016

In my kitchen, I have a wooden recipe box. I keep all my cooking recipes in this box. My recipes are divided into different categories — cakes, cookies, casseroles, soups, etc.
But way in the back of the box, I have some special recipes. These recipes were written by my mother many years ago. My husband and I were planning to go to my parents’ house for Thanksgiving, but my husband had to work. I was so disappointed! But my mother wrote out all my favorite Thanksgiving recipes and sent them to me so I could prepare our own dinner. I treasure these recipes because my mother took time to write them down for me.
God has taken the time to prepare His Word, the Bible, for us. Our Bible verses for today remind us that the Bible is from God and is useful to help us become strong and growing Christians.

Be Thankful
Bible Reading: Philippians 4:4-9
Monday, November 21, 2016

Later this week, people in America will celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Giving thanks is something that Paul taught. Verse 6 of our Bible Reading says, “Don't worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have.”
Many Americans who celebrate Thanksgiving Day only think about a day of vacation and all the food they will eat. But Thanksgiving Day is more than that. It is a day to thank God for all our blessings — families, homes, jobs, food and most important, Jesus!
Maybe you have to work on Thanksgiving Day. Maybe you don't have family members you can eat with. Maybe you don't have a lot of food to eat. Those things are not the most important. What is most important is to thank God for the many ways He has blessed you.
Praise God for all He has done for you! —ECW

“You must depend on Christ only, drawing life and strength from him. Just as you were taught the truth, continue to grow stronger in your understanding of it. And never stop giving thanks to God.” Colossians 2:7
PRAYER: Help me, Father, to always remember what You have done for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
