Jesus (9)
Bible Reading: Luke 8:22-25
Tuesday, August 30, 2016

Jesus created the earth and everything in it. That is wonderful! In our Bible Reading today, Jesus proved that He is the Master over water when He calmed the sea. “He gave a command to the wind and the waves. The wind stopped, and the lake became calm” (verse 24b). Yes, Jesus is truly powerful.
The sun, moon, stars and water have no choice. They must obey Jesus. But we have a choice. We can choose to make Jesus our Master or choose the devil as our master. Jesus could force us to follow Him, but instead, He allows us to choose Him as our Master.
Jesus can do anything He wants. That's why He gives us the freedom to choose Him to be the ruler over our lives. Jesus would not be happy if He had to force us to follow Him. But when we choose to make Him our Master, He is very happy!
So make Jesus happy, and make yourself happy, too! Choose to follow Jesus. —PK

“But maybe you don't want to serve the Lord. You must choose for yourselves today. Today you must decide who you will serve.” Joshua 24:15a
PRAYER: Father, I want Jesus to be my Master. Help me to choose Him today. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Jesus (2)
Bible Reading: Luke 1:26-38
Tuesday, August 23, 2016

A miracle is an event that can only happen through God's power. Jesus did many miracles. He healed people. He walked on water. Jesus calmed a storm by speaking to it. He made dead people live again. The Bible tells us about many miracles that Jesus did while He was on earth.
But did you know that Jesus Himself is a miracle? We know that for a baby to be born, it needs a father and a mother. But Jesus did not have a human father. Our Bible verses today tell us that the Holy Spirit caused Jesus to be conceived in Mary. Truly Jesus' birth is a miracle!
Jesus' death is also a miracle. He died on the cross and was buried. But three days after He was buried, God made Him alive again. That was the most wonderful miracle of all. Because Jesus is alive, we know we can have eternal life if we follow and obey Him. —MK

“All this happened to make clear the full meaning of what the Lord said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will be pregnant and will give birth to a son. They will name him Immanuel.’ (Immanuel means ‘God with us.’)” Matthew 1:22-23
PRAYER: Dear God, thank You for the miracle of Jesus. In His name. Amen.

—GT

Fear God
Bible Reading: Psalm 128:1-6
Wednesday, August 10, 2016

What are you afraid of? Maybe you are afraid of fire, the dark, being alone or spiders. Even Jesus' disciples were afraid sometimes. They were afraid when they were in the storm on Lake Galilee (Matthew 8:23-27). They thought they would drown. But Jesus calmed the wind and the waves.
Verse 1a of our Bible Reading says, “Great blessings belong to those who fear and respect the Lord.” What does this mean? Should we fear God like we fear the dark or spiders? Fearing God means that we love God and are totally devoted to Him. It means that we want to do things that please and honor Him instead of things that He does not like.
There will be times in life when we may be afraid of something. That's when we need to depend on the peace that Jesus gives us. But we also need to fear and respect God and His awesome power. God loves you and wants you to trust and honor Him. —GT

—JK

Bible Reading: Exodus 19:16-20
Tuesday, August 9, 2016

I did not sleep well last night. We had a bad thunderstorm, and there was lots of thunder. Even if you are deaf and have never heard thunder, you have probably felt the vibrations that thunder produces.
Thunder has always been a symbol of great power. Our Bible verses today tell us about the time when Moses met God on Mount Sinai. It was at this time that God gave Moses His commands for the Israelites. “On the morning of the third day, a thick cloud came down onto the mountain. There was thunder and lightning and a very loud sound from a trumpet” (verse 16). Then verse 19b says, “Every time Moses spoke to God, God answered him with a voice like thunder.”
God is very loving and kind. But He is also great and powerful. We can read about His great power in the Bible. And we can see God's power today through creation. Take time today to look at the world. Think about God's power and thank Him for His goodness. —JK

—JK

When my children were little, we liked to look at clouds. Some looked like an elephant or a crocodile. Others looked like the face of a person or a flower. I have seen some awesome clouds in my life. But I think nothing can compare with the cloud talked about in our Bible Reading today. These verses tell us that God visibly led the Israelites out of Egypt on their journey to a new land. “During the day, he used a tall cloud to lead the people. And during the night, he used a tall column of fire to lead the way” (verse 21b).
That cloud must have been very large and very special. It would have been easy for the Israelites to follow it. Sometimes I wish that God would use a special cloud to help me know which way I should go in life. But He doesn't do that! Instead, I have God's Word, the Bible, to be my guide through life. Follow the Bible today. God's Word will help you stay on the right path. —JK

God is Powerful
Bible Reading: Psalm 29:1-5
Wednesday, June 8, 2016

One summer I was hiking in the mountains. Suddenly a strong wind came down the mountain and into the valley. The trees swayed back and forth, but they did not break. No matter how strong the wind blew, the trees stood strong.
Our Bible Reading today reminds us that God is very powerful. Verses 4 and 5 say,“The Lord's voice is powerful. It shows the Lord's glory. The Lord's voice shatters great cedar trees. The Lord breaks the great cedars of Lebanon.” God is so powerful that even the sound of His voice can break strong trees!
Because God is powerful, we should praise Him and thank Him for what He has done for us. Our response to Him should be to bow down and worship Him.
Take time today to think about God's great power. Thank Him for the things He has made and for His gift of salvation. —CS

God is Busy
Bible Reading: John 5:16-23

There was an old college professor who lived on the top floor of a tall building on a college campus. This man was happy to live there, but often people would ask, “Don't you get lonely living up there?” The professor would always answer, “No, my only neighbor is God. He is always busy, but He's quiet.”
In our Bible Reading today, Jesus was busy healing and helping people. Jesus said, “My Father never stops working, and so I work too” (verse 17). God is always at work in our lives. Sometimes God works in dramatic ways — when He heals us from a sickness or when He suddenly answers our prayer in an amazing way.
But often God works quietly in our lives. He is always with us and pays attention to our prayers. God continues to encourage and strengthen us as we work every day.
Thank God today that He is always busy working in your life! —AA

Water Miracles (8)
Bible Reading: Mark 4:35-41

 In Iowa we
often have
very bad
storms in
the summer.
It can be
scary when
the clouds
become black, the wind blows hard and the rains come down. When that happens, there is nothing any person can do to stop the wind and the rain.
In our Bible verses, Jesus and some of His followers were on the lake. A very bad storm came up. The wind was so strong that water came into their boat. Jesus' followers became afraid. Jesus stood up and told the wind and the waves to stop. Wow! The wind and the waves obeyed Jesus. After Jesus did this, His followers were still afraid. They said (verse 41), “What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the water obey him!” Jesus' followers had seen Jesus perform many miracles. But they were still afraid.
All the miracles in the Bible show us God's power. If God can do these wonderful miracles, then He can also give us a way to have our sins forgiven. This way is through Jesus. God's plan of salvation is the greatest miracle of all! —JK

Water Miracles (5)
Bible Reading: 2 Kings 6:1-7
Friday, April 22, 2016

Today we will look at another miracle involving water. The prophet Elisha and some other prophets cut down trees near the Jordan River. They planned to use the wood to build a larger place for them to live. One of the prophets used an ax that he had borrowed from someone. While he was cutting down a tree, the iron head of the ax fell into the river. Elisha went to the place where the ax head had fallen into the river. He cut a stick and threw it into the water. Then the ax head floated to the surface of the water. This was another miracle done with God's power.
I think this miracle is very important. Why? Because it shows us that God is concerned with everyday things that happen to us. Not all God's miracles were about big things. This miracle was about a tool that was lost.
God cares about what happens to you every day. He may not perform a miracle for you, but He will help you through difficult times. Praise God for His love and concern! —JK

—JK

Water Miracles (1)
Bible Reading: Exodus 7:14-24
Monday, April 18, 2016

Miracles are amazing works done by God's power. Many times God did miracles for His people. Several of these miracles involved water. For the next several days we will look at some of these “water miracles” from the Bible.
God’s chosen people, the Israelites, were slaves in Egypt. The king would not free them from slavery.
So God sent ten terrible events to bother the people of Egypt. God did this to show His power. He also wanted the Egyptians to let the Israelites go free.
The Egyptian people got their water from the Nile River. So the first terrible event was that God changed the Nile River into blood. The water in the canals and lakes changed to blood, too. Our Bible Reading says that even the water stored in jars changed into blood. Then the fish in the Nile died and began to stink. What a mess!
This water miracle shows us that God has power over nature. God created the earth and everything in it. And God can control the things He made. Thank God for His power today! —JK

PRAYER: God, thank You for Your power. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
