Old Testament (9)
Bible Reading: Leviticus 1:1-17
Monday, October 3, 2016

Often people are afraid to read Leviticus. Leviticus can be a difficult book to read and understand. But we can learn many things from studying this book.
There are five offerings mentioned in Leviticus — the burnt offering, the meal offering, the peace offering, the trespass offering and the sin offering. Each offering has a purpose, and they all point to Jesus in the New Testament. The burnt offering mentioned in our Bible verses involved killing an animal that had nothing wrong with it. Blood had to be splashed. And God would accept it to make a person pure.
Jesus became our “burnt offering.” He could do this because He never did anything wrong. He was killed on a cross, and His blood covered all our sins. Because of what Jesus did for us, we can be made pure. Then God will accept us. Isn’t that neat? Maybe now you will be more excited to read and learn from Leviticus! —CPE*

“Don’t you know that your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit that you received from God and that lives in you. You don’t own yourselves.” 1 Corinthians 6:19
PRAYER: Dear God, thank You for Jesus who is my “burnt offering.” In His name. Amen.

Old Testament (8)
Bible Reading: Joshua 22:26-29, 34
Sunday, October 2, 2016

Men from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh helped the other Israelites fight a war. When the war was over, Joshua told them to go home. He encouraged them to continue worshiping God even though they would be living far from the other tribes.
So the men from these three tribes built an altar. They explained why they built the altar, “The real reason we wanted our altar was to show our people that we worship the same God as you do. This altar will be the proof to you and us and to all our future children that we worship the Lord” (verse 27a).
It is very important that we show our children and our grandchildren what we believe. Our times of worshiping God, reading and studying the Bible, praying and fellowshiping with other Christians are good examples for our children and grandchildren.
Be an example to your children and grandchildren. Help them learn how to worship and obey God. —BC*

“The people of Reuben and Gad named the altar ‘Proof That We Believe the Lord is God.’” Joshua 22:34
PRAYER: Dear God, help me to show others how to worship You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

God's Test
Bible Reading: Genesis 22:1-12
Wednesday, March 16, 2016

I have a son and a daughter. I love them both very much. I cannot imagine killing either one of them. But in our Bible verses today, God told Abraham to kill his son, Isaac, and burn his body as a sacrifice to God! HOW AWFUL!
Abraham's faith in God was so strong that Abraham decided to obey God. He would kill his son! Can you believe it? Remember, Isaac was the son that God promised to Abraham and Sarah. God had promised that all nations would be blessed through Isaac. How could God keep His promise if Abraham killed Isaac? Abraham must have decided that God can keep His promises, no matter what happens.
Abraham obeyed God. He built an altar, tied up Isaac and then raised his knife to kill Isaac. “But the angel of the Lord stopped him” (verse 11a).
Abraham passed God's test of faith. How strong is your faith in God? —DK

“The angel said, ‘Don't kill your son or hurt him in any way. Now I see that you do respect and obey God. I see that you are ready to kill your son, your only son, for me.'” Genesis 22:12
PRAYER: Lord, You always make things okay for people who have faith in You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Birth Story (6)
Bible Reading: Hebrews 7:1-17
Thursday, December 17, 2015

In Bible times, Jewish priests made sacrifices to God for His people. These sacrifices needed to be offered again and again.
Did you know that on that first Christmas, a priest was born? Verse 17 of our Bible Reading today tells us that Jesus is a priest. This verse also compares Jesus to Melchizedek.
We learn about Melchizedek from Genesis 14:18-20. Melchizedek accepted offerings from Abraham hundreds of years before Jesus was born. Jesus and Melchizedek were not like any other priests. God used both of them at a special time to do a special job.
Jesus is both our priest and our sacrifice. God sent Jesus to earth to be a priest and to offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we can have our sins forgiven and enjoy life with Him forever.
Thank God today for sending Jesus to be our priest and the sacrifice for our sins. —GT

“The Lord has made a promise with an oath and will not change his mind: You are a priest forever — the kind of priest Melchizedek was.” Psalm 110:4
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus, our priest forever. In His name. Amen.
