A Very Large Stone
Bible Reading: Matthew 27:57-28:8
Sunday, March 31, 2013
Matthew 27:60 tells us that a very large stone covered the entrance to Jesus’ tomb. The next few verses also tell us that some Jewish leaders were afraid that someone might try to steal Jesus’ body. So Pilate sent Roman soldiers to guard the tomb. Early in the morning of the next day, there was a “huge earthquake” (28:2). An angel came from the sky and rolled the stone away from the entrance. The soldiers who were guarding the tomb “shook with fear and then became like dead men” (28:4). But Jesus had already risen from the dead. So why did the angel roll away the stone? The stone needed to be moved so everyone could see that Jesus was not there! Jesus had conquered death! As you celebrate Jesus’ resurrection today, think about how excited Jesus’ followers were to hear the angel say, “Jesus is not here. He has risen from death” (Luke 24:6a). —IMJ “I know you are looking for Jesus, the one who was killed on the cross. But he is not here. He has risen from death, as he said he would. Come and see the place where his body was.” Matthew 28:5b-6
PRAYER: Thank You, Father, for our risen Savior. In His name. Amen. |

Bible Reading: Luke 23:54-56
Saturday, March 30, 2013
Our Bible verses today tell us about what happened right after Jesus’ body was placed in the tomb. Some women had followed Jesus when He traveled to Jerusalem from Galilee. These are probably the same women who were at the cross when Jesus died (John 19:25). They followed Joseph and saw Jesus’ tomb. These women went “to prepare some sweet-smelling spices to put on the body” (verse 56a). The rest of verse 56 tells us that first the women rested. Why? Because it was the Sabbath Day, and God had told the Jews to rest on the Sabbath Day. It was important that they put spices on Jesus’ body, but it was even more important that the women obey God’s rules. Sometimes we think that we have very important things we must do. But the most important thing we can do is to obey God. We can read the Bible and learn what God wants us to do. Obey and trust Him today! —BH “The men put Jesus in that tomb because it was near, and the Jews were preparing to start their Sabbath Day.” John 19:42

After Jesus died, a man named Joseph took Jesus’ body to prepare it for burial. Joseph was a member of the Jewish council. Verse 50 of our Bible Reading tells us that he “was a good man, who lived the way God wanted.” Joseph did not agree with the Jewish leaders who had killed Jesus. Joseph took Jesus’ body from the cross, wrapped it in cloth and laid it in a tomb. John, chapter 19, tells us that another man, Nicodemus, was with Joseph. Nicodemus brought 100 pounds of spices to prepare Jesus’ body for burial. Joseph and Nicodemus must have been very sad as they buried Jesus. But they were willing to take care of Jesus’ body even though other Jewish leaders could have arrested them. Joseph and Nicodemus wanted to show their love for Jesus. I hope you love Jesus and are willing to follow and obey Him today. —BH “These two men took Jesus’ body and wrapped it in pieces of linen cloth with the spices...In the garden there was a new tomb. No one had ever been buried there before.” John 19:40-41

Our Bible verses today continue to tell us about Jesus’ death. The soldiers threw dice to decide who would get Jesus’ clothes. The Jewish religious leaders yelled at Jesus. Other people laughed at Him. Two criminals were also hung on crosses — one on each side of Jesus. One of the criminals shouted insults at Jesus. But the other criminal said, “You should fear God. All of us will die soon. You and I are guilty. We deserve to die because we did wrong. But this man has done nothing wrong”He also knew that Jesus was innocent. Every person on earth needs to realize that they are a sinner. Then they need to know that Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for their sins, and accept His gift of salvation. Take time today to ask God to forgive your sins. And thank Him for salvation through Jesus. —BH “Yes, at one time you were far away from God, but now in Christ Jesus, you are brought near to him. You are brought near to God through the blood sacrifice of Christ.” Ephesians 2:13 PRAYER: Dear Father, I confess my sins and ask You to forgive me. In His name. Amen.

Today and for the next few days, we will look at verses from Luke, chapter 23. These verses tell us about Jesus dying on the cross. Pilate sentenced Jesus to die on a cross. The soldiers led Him away to a hill called Golgotha. They forced Jesus to carry His own wooden cross. Before this, the soldiers had beaten Jesus. He was too weak to carry the heavy cross. So they forced a man “to carry Jesus’ cross and walk behind him” (verse 26b). The man who carried Jesus’ cross was named Simon. He was from Cyrene. Maybe Simon did not even know who Jesus was. I wonder how Simon felt as he walked behind Jesus to Golgotha. People forced Simon to carry Jesus’ cross. But no one forced Jesus to die on the cross. He was willing to give up His life for us. Why? Because He loves us and wants us to receive God’s gift of salvation. Praise God that Jesus was willing to die for us! —BH “They led Jesus to the place called Golgotha. (Golgotha means “The Place of the Skull.”) The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross.” Mark 15:22,24a

The Lord’s Death
Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 11:23-32
Tuesday, March 26, 2013
When Jesus died on the cross, the devil must have been very happy. The devil thought that he had finally won. But three days later, Jesus arose. The devil probably doesn’t like to think about Jesus’ death. It reminds him that Jesus won. And Jesus’ death reminds the devil that someday God will punish him. But as Christians, we are supposed to think about Jesus’ death. In our Bible Reading today, Paul talked about the Lord’s Supper. Paul said in verse 26, “This means that every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are telling others about the Lord’s death until he comes again.” We should not just think about Jesus’ death at Easter time, we should think about it all the time. Take time today to think about Jesus’ death. Thank Him for dying so that you can have life forever with Him. —ECW “In the same way, after they ate, Jesus took the cup of wine. He said, ‘This cup represents the new agreement from God, which begins with my blood sacrifice. When you drink this, do it to remember me.’” 1 Corinthians 11:25

Suffering and Strength
Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 12:1-10
Monday, March 25, 2013
Today we often read about people who have “near death” experiences. These people say that they felt God’s presence in ways they can’t explain. These experiences change people’s lives in amazing ways. I had a similar experience after a serious car accident thirty years ago. Back then people did not talk about these experiences. After I read about Paul’s experience in today’s Bible Reading, I finally understood what had happened to me. God could have chosen to heal me from my injuries, but He did not. Like Paul, I was given a “painful problem” (verse 7) and suffering. This suffering has kept me from becoming proud and taught me that I can’t depend on my own strength. No one enjoys problems and suffering. But it is during those times that we really rely on God. Are you weak? Then rejoice! And like Paul, learn to say, “I am glad when I am persecuted and have problems, because it is when I am weak that I am really strong” (verse 10b). —JKS “But the Lord said, ‘My grace is all you need. Only when you are weak can everything be done completely by my power.’” 2 Corinthians 12:9a

Quiet Place
Bible Reading: Matthew 6:5-13
Sunday, March 24, 2013
In our Bible Reading, Jesus talked about prayer. He said when we pray, we should not stand in a public place so other people can hear/see our prayers. Instead, Jesus said, “...when you pray, you should go into your room and close the door. Then pray to your Father. He is there in that private place” (verse 6a). I like to get up early in the morning before anyone else is awake. I sit in my favorite chair and drink a cup of coffee. I read the Bible and pray. This is my special quiet place. I feel relaxed and close to God. It is great to have a special quiet place, but you can pray to God anywhere and anytime. You can pray as you are driving to work. You can pray as you type on your computer. And you can talk to God while you are shopping at the mall. Spend some time today talking with God. Praise and thank Him. Tell God how you feel. Then ask Him to help you serve and obey Him. —JK “Our Father in heaven, we pray that your name will always be kept holy. We pray that your kingdom will come — that what you want will be done here on earth, the same as in heaven.” Matthew 6:9b-10

My dad taught me how to ride a bicycle. Learning to ride was not easy. I had to balance on two wheels and try not to fall off. It was much easier with Dad’s help. I can still remember how I learned to ride my bike. I sat on the bike, and Dad walked behind me. He firmly held onto the back of my bicycle seat. At first, he helped me steer. When I gained some confidence, he only held onto the seat of the bike. I trusted my dad. I knew that he would not let me fall. He waited until I was ready to ride by myself, and then he let go of the bicycle. I had faith in him and the things he taught me. If we want to please God, we need to have this same kind of faith. We need to believe that God will always be with us and never fail us. Our Bible verses today talk about Abraham whose “faith never became weak” (verse 19b). Be like Abraham today. Have a strong faith in God and trust Him to guide you every day. —PD “Be careful. Hold firmly to your faith. Have courage and be strong. Do everything in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:13

The Church
Bible Reading: Matthew 28:16-20
Friday, March 22, 2013
What is the mission of the church? The Bible clearly tells us the purpose of the church. In our Bible verse today, we read some of the last words Jesus spoke to His disciples before He went away to be with God in heaven. Jesus told the disciples, “So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything that I have told you to do” (verses 19-20a). That is the mission of the church. God wants all people to follow and worship Him. As Christians, we need to reach out and share this Good News with other people. We have a responsibility to share about Jesus locally, nationally and internationally. We can tell our neighbors about Jesus as well as help missionaries who work with poor people and orphans in other countries. I challenge you to share the news about Jesus with someone today. Experience God’s love for all people in the world. —JS* “The followers went everywhere in the world telling people the Good News, and the Lord helped them.” Mark 16:20a
PRAYER: Father, show me how I can share Your love with someone today. In Jesus’ name. Amen. |
