Bible Reading: Luke 18:9-14
Thursday, April 3, 2014
In today’s Bible Reading, Jesus told a story about two men — a Jewish religious leader called a Pharisee and a tax collector. Both of these men were sinners. The Pharisee and the tax collector both went to the temple. The Pharisee prayed, “O God, I thank you that I am not as bad as other people...I thank you that I am better than this tax collector” (verse 11b). It is sad that the Pharisee was a proud man and refused to admit he was a sinner. When the tax collector prayed, he said (verse 13b), “O God, have mercy on me. I am a sinner!” This man admitted he was a sinner. Jesus said that this man “was right with God” (verse 14b). Jesus’ story shows us that all people are sinners. But He does not want us to be proud. Jesus wants us to be humble and admit that we need God’s help. —GT “But if we confess our sins, God will forgive us. We can trust God to do this. He always does what is right. He will make us clean from all the wrong things we have done.”1 John 1:9
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me to be humble and to trust You. In Jesus’ name. Amen. |
