Thirsty for Jesus
Bible Reading: John 4:5-14
Thursday, March 31, 2016

There is a walking trail a few blocks from my house. This trail runs by a creek and into the woods. A large bridge crosses the creek. If I stand on this bridge, I can watch the water flowing below.
Several years ago, we had a drought. I was afraid that the creek would dry up. The water level did drop very low, but there was always some water in the creek.
This made me think about our Bible Reading for today. Jesus told the woman in Samaria that He could give her living water. “...anyone who drinks the water I give will never be thirsty again. The water I give people will be like a spring flowing inside them. It will bring them eternal life” (verse 14).

When I face problems in my life, Jesus is the one who can truly help me. When I am worried, He gives me comfort. When I am uncertain about what to do, Jesus gives me His truth and wisdom. Are you “thirsty” for Jesus in your life? Turn to Him and follow Him today! —KC

“Jesus answered, ‘You don't know what God can give you...If you knew, you would have asked me, and I would have given you living water.'” John 4:10
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for filling me with Your living water every day. In Jesus' name. Amen.

You Can't Do It Yourself
Bible Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10
Wednesday, March 30, 2016

Do you enjoy painting, drawing or sewing? Do you like to fix broken things or invent something new? Maybe you are good at do-it-yourself projects around the house. That's wonderful!
But there is one project that you can't do by yourself. No matter how skilled or creative you are, you can't do this project. Do you know what that project is? Salvation! No matter how good you are or how often you go to church or how many times you read through the Bible, you can't save yourself!
Only God's grace can save you from your sin and give you forgiveness. Verse 8 of our Bible Reading today says, “I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God.”
Please accept God's wonderful gift of salvation through Jesus. Read His Word and obey it! —GT

“All have sinned and are not good enough to share God's divine greatness. They were made right with God by his grace. This is a free gift. They were made right with God by being made free from sin through Jesus Christ.” Romans 3:23-24
PRAYER: Father, I know I can't save myself. I accept Your gift of salvation. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Bible Diary
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:17-24
Tuesday, March 29, 2016

Every day I drive to work along the same route. As I drive, I do not pay much attention to the streets I pass or the names of stores along the way.
Every year I read through the entire Bible. I have finished it 35 times. But sometimes when I am reading familiar verses, it is like I am driving to work. I read the words, but I do not allow God's Word to speak to me.
So I decided to make a Bible diary. This is not a diary where I write down what happened that day. Instead, it is a diary where I write down what I learned that day from my Bible reading. This forces me to pay attention to what I am reading and to apply it to my life. Every day when I read God’s Word there is a special treasure waiting for me!
Verse 18 of our Bible Reading says, “Open my eyes so that I can see all the wonderful things in your teachings.” I hope that you will read God’s Word every day and learn something new. —BL

“I am your servant, and I continue to study your laws. Your rules make me happy. They give me good advice.” Psalm 119:23b-24
PRAYER: Dear God, open my heart so that I can learn something new from Your Word today. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—DJH*

Trusting God
Bible Reading: Romans 8:28-30
Monday, March 28, 2016

My 84-year-old brother-in-law slipped and fell in the garage. He broke the large bone in his upper leg. After surgery, he needed several weeks of physical therapy. His wife was not able to take care of him at home, so he had to go to a nursing home until his leg was healed.
My brother-in-law did not want to live in a nursing home. He was very upset. But there was no one else who could take care of him, so he decided to trust God. He read the verses in our Bible Reading today. Verse 28a says, “We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him.” After reading those verses, he felt better.
After my brother-in-law had been in the nursing home for a few days, he realized that he needed to be there. He was not upset anymore. Soon he was able to stand up and then able to go home again.
Maybe there is something in your life that is upsetting you. Trust God. He will work things out in a good way. Then you will be happy that you trusted Him. —DJH*

Self-control
Bible Reading: 1 Peter 5:6-9
Sunday, March 27, 2016

I have a young son. He can be happy one minute and upset the next minute.
The other night we were in a store. My son was tired. He demanded that I take him out of the shopping cart and let him walk. I told my son that he had to ask me nicely. Then he became very upset. I told him he could get down when he was under control. Some people might say I was too harsh with my son. But I wanted to teach my son to have self-control.
Many times I am like my son. I react quickly to something that happens. Then I become upset. Instead, I need to be self-controlled.

Our Bible Reading today says that the devil is like a roaring lion. He is looking for people who are not self-controlled. The devil wants to tempt these people to sin. Verse 9a tells us what we should do: “Refuse to follow the devil. Stand strong in your faith.”
If you want to be self-controlled, give your life to God. Then let His Holy Spirit live and work in your life. —JM

“Control yourselves and be careful! The devil is your enemy.” 1 Peter 5:8a
PRAYER: God, I want to be self-controlled and honor You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

—JM

Gentleness
Bible Reading: Philippians 4:4-9
Saturday, March 26, 2016

My dad used to say that some people were like a “bull in a china shop.” Can you imagine a big bull in a shop filled with china dishes, stomping around and breaking all the china?
My dad was talking about people who are loud and rude and unkind. The opposite of these people are people who are gentle. Gentle people are kind and loving. They are careful not to hurt other people.
Sometimes we say/sign things and hurt someone's feelings. When we talk or sign to people, we need to be gentle. We need to remember that God made every person to be special. We should respect other people and treat them with gentleness.
Will you be gentle with your family and friends? Will you be gentle with your co-workers or the people you see in the grocery store? Show gentleness to every person you meet today. —JM

“But the wisdom that comes from God is like this: First, it is pure. It is also peaceful, gentle, and easy to please. This wisdom is always ready to help people who have trouble and to do good for others.” James 3:17a

—JM

Faithfulness
Bible Reading: 3 John 2-8
Friday, March 25, 2016

When I think about faithfulness, I think about a boy and his dog. The dog thinks he has the best master in the world. And the boy feels that his dog is his best friend.
God is faithful to us, and we should be faithful to Him. When God's Holy Spirit lives in us, other people should be able to see our faithfulness. If we are faithful to God, we will obey His commands and try to be like Jesus.
Reading the Bible, reading this devotion book and praying every day are ways we show our faithfulness. But we also need to be faithful to God in the things we say/ sign and the things we do. Then other people can truly see that we believe God and follow Him.
Our Bible Reading today tells us about Gaius. He was a man who was faithful to God, even though some people were doing bad things to him. Today you will have opportunities to show your faithfulness to God. Choose to obey God and turn away from sin. —JM

“It always gives me the greatest joy when I hear that my children are following the way of truth.” 3 John 4

Goodness
Bible Reading: 2 Peter 1:3-9
Thursday, March 24, 2016

One of the first things parents tell their children is to be good. As children grow up, their parents tell them over and over again to be good. But, what does it mean to be good?
Sometimes being good means doing what is right. Often, being good means doing something extra. And other times, being good means doing a job well.
But the goodness that God gives us is different. God's goodness is His blessings that we can share with others. Verse 5b of our Bible Reading says, “to your faith add goodness.” We want to tell other people about our faith in God. But if we also share God's blessings with them, we show them God's love and greatness.

God works in our lives every day. He changes us to become better servants for Him. And He helps us share His goodness with others. —JM

“If all these things are in you and growing, you will never fail to be useful to God. You will produce the kind of fruit that should come from your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:8
PRAYER: Dear God, only You are truly good. Help me show Your goodness to others. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Kindness
Bible Reading: 1 Peter 2:1-3
Wednesday, March 23, 2016

Recently I was watching some children in a church nursery. Everything was fine until one little girl wanted a toy that someone else had. Then a boy wanted to climb the slide while another child was on it. Soon the children were upset and doing unkind things to each other.
Why are children unkind to each other? It's simple. When they don't get what they want, they stop being kind. It's the same with adults. When we become selfish and greedy, we stop showing kindness to others.
God wants us to get rid of all selfishness and greed in our lives. Verse 1 of our Bible Reading says, “So then, stop doing anything to hurt others. Don't lie anymore and stop trying to fool people. Don't be jealous or say bad things about others.” Instead, God wants us to be filled with His kindness.
You will have opportunities to be kind to people today — at work, in the grocery store or as you are driving down the road. Ask God to help you be kind to others. —JM

—JM

Patience
Bible Reading: Romans 5:1-11
Tuesday, March 22, 2016

A few years ago, if you wanted to tell something to your friend who lived far away, you had to write a letter. Then you had to put the letter in an envelope and mail it. Your friend would receive your letter four or five days later and write back to you. So, after ten or twelve days, you would get a response from your friend.
The world is different today. We can send an e-mail or text our friend and receive an immediate response. Or, we can call our deaf friend on a videophone and see them signing to us.
But God wants us to be patient in our communication with Him. When we are patient, we focus on God instead of focusing on ourselves and our troubles. It is hard to be patient because we want everything NOW. But God knows what is best for us. He will work out everything in His time.
Be patient with God and with other people, too. —JM

“...these troubles make us more patient. And this patience is proof that we are strong. And this proof gives us hope.” Romans 5:3b-4
PRAYER: Father, I want to be patient. Help me to remember that You always know what is best for me. In Jesus' name. Amen.
